ScuzzBlog: Diaries April 2018

Entry 21st April 2018: Post: 3

Groundhog Day - A day shall never forget

I was so close to buying a Windows based PC in 1993 following my
years of working with the Amstrad PC9512. The thing was about to
set me back £2000 and I was minded to go into debt for the machine.
I recall being in this hot boring computer shop in the main high
street surrounded by faceless machines, at risk of becoming a
boring suit long before my day.

I decide not to buy the computer and instead went to see the film
Groundhog Day at the local cinema. It was the summer and I caught
the afternoon show. As I left in the blistering heat I was drawn
to the very colourful display in Dixons shop window the electrical
supplier. For there were countless Amiga 600s all brilliantly
coloured and buzzing with activity. I hot footed to the local
newsagent and bought the magazine featured below.

For months I would sit up each night in bed and cruise the pages
of the magazine enjoying all the mouthwatering articles. At the
time I was mainly mucking around with video and animation. I had
two video players hooked up together and used the hi-fi and
camera to mix my videos and animations. I needed a better way to
edit and save my work and the Amiga 600 looked the business.

Amiga Format from July of 1993

I guess if I had gone the way of the
Windows PC I would have very quickly
become a boring suit. Instead when I
saw games like Syndicate I realised
I could have so much fun on a computer
And in colour.. just wonderful

But animation is what lead me here
I had spent any number of years with
pencil and paper and video camera. The
idea of a computer only came to me cus
to get a better camera that could store
more data was so expensive.

I had already determined as I read
the pages of the magazine which games
I would most like to play. Ishar was
a given as it best suited my desire to
feed my Games Workshop history

I was heavy into Babylon 5 and so the
thought of actually using a computer
used in the making of the series was awesome

But video was the primary driver here
and the Amiga seemed purpose designed
to work with video and animation

And there was Ishar. I just couldn't wait.

And so I decided to save my pennies
and buy an Amiga 600. The other
obvious attraction was the price

I mean how could anyone resist the
Amiga in the day. It looked so exciting
a prospect to use and enjoy. When I look
back on this I just can't believe I left
it so long to actually buy an Amiga

My future became the Amiga

Fascinating

What was sad in the end was that
I came to the party so late. With
Commodore going bust the following
year it was like the game was up
even before I had really got started
By the time classic games like Dreamweb
hit the shelves, the poor Amiga was
without a home and in need of serious
financial support to keep it going

And I so wanted the chance to keep
playing games like Dreamweb

Some scribbles of mine that I found
inside one of my magazines

I was so close to not owning an Amiga

I purchased an Amiga 1200 in November 1993

I fear that had I not bought an Amiga
at the time I would simply have faded
into the grey dull background that is
the Windows based world. Fortunately I
was gifted the joy of being part of the
Amiga dream and still use my Amigas today

Beam me up Scotty
