ScuzzBlog: Diaries April 2020
Entry 29th April 2020: Post 01: PlayStation 3 - My black day.
PlayStation 3 - My black day.
I have been aware for over a decade of the issues with the PS3
relating to the overheating and failure of the CPU and graphics
chip. I guess I just hoped it would never happen to me. Sadly last
night whilst playing Hitman Absolution the console just stopped
functioning. I was greeted with the red light of death Or the
yellow light of death. Depends how you look at it.
Switching on the console you are greeted with a green light which
flickers through a yellow briefly and then blinks red. But nothing
happens. I am not able to retrieve my disc. Some claim you can eject
the disc by switch off and holding the eject when switching on.
That doesn't work for me.
The solution is to crack her open and extract the motherboard and
use a heat gun on the whole board but mainly on the two main chips.
There is also a possibility of failure of the capacitors which are
small rectangular components. The type that fail quite regularly
in laptops it seems. The chips are then coated in paste before
sealing to the heat shield and rebuilding. Should work.
I have reflected on matters all day, but am not minded to crack
open that warranty seal on the console. She has been a real treasure
and worked without fault since 2007. We have had a great deal of fun
over the years and I shall miss her.
So what have I done. Well I have drafted in the XBOX 360 and ordered
my favourite PS3 games for the XBOX. The console is set up and now
functional. I have also purchased a second-hand PS3 and am hoping
it will arrive next week. I cannot be without a PS3.
So why do I not try to fix the PS3 ? She would never be the same.
I am comforted that she can be fixed at any time. She fell doing the
thing she was best at, and that was in the provision of gaming fun
for me. She deserves a rest and now she can rest. I will always
treasure our time together but it is time to close this chapter.
The PlayStation 5 will soon be released and I look forward that.
A black day , maybe, but with every night a day will dawn. From
despair always comes hope and fresh opportunities. Opening doors.
