ScuzzBlog: Diaries August 2019
Entry 8th August 2019: Post 01: Apple Macintosh PowerPC G4.
Apple Macintosh PowerPC G4.
Ok I am all MACs'd out now. There are a few others including the
Apple II that I could power up but I think I am done for now. It
isn't that I have anything against the Apple, it's just that I
never find them interesting to use. I guess they basically do
the job and that is about it. As a designer by profession I was
educated not to be too deterministic and force my ideas onto users.
Whilst good design always aims to lift the spirit, it must also
respect the desire of the user to express themselves and never
feel constrained by the will of the designer. Just cus you like
the view doesn't mean everyone wants to live in a glass box. I
mean where are you going to hang the pictures.
For me I always feel I have to use the MAC in the way the designer
wanted me to and not t'other way round. Also the design may look
good but they are impractical in a world of clutter where you
need to stand stuff on top and against things. This thing has
these dreadful handles on the top that make just lying stuff on
the top and stacking other things around it a real pain. The
iMAC is even worse... Worst computer design ever.
In the end the computer is a computer first and therefore the
base activity should be pretty 'transparent'. Windows is worse, but
at least with Windows I can use all my preferred software without
issue and also play my online games like Tera and Warcraft. Loads
of what I have assumes an industry standard of MS. Sad but true.
Trust me I wish things had been different and whilst I don't
blame MS or Apple for the demise of Commodore, I always feel I am
forced to used second and even third best in comparison.
Never mind. I fired up the G4 and it worked fine. Never ever get
the hang of one button mice and see thro keyboards that look great
new but after a while collect so much filth in the bottom tray
that you cannot clean. And then there is the dreaded keyboard and
mouse combinations that mean I can't surf and hold a cuppa tea
with my left hand. I rarely need the keyboard when using Windows.
Power Mac G4 Model 3.4
CPU Type PowerPC G4 (2.9) 533 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU) 1MB
Memory 768 MB Bus Speed 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version 4.2.8f1
I show a couple of images of the Windows 7 spec that I have been
using since 2011. I have used Windows machines exclusively for my
online work since 1996. I wouldn't use anything else. And the Win7
is the best MS OS ever made. I do have a Win10 DELL machine sitting
here in the wings just in case, and for next year when Win7 dies.
I do not look forward to Win10 which I do blame Apple for. I don't
have a mobile phone nor ever intend getting one. And poor old MS
were never that worldly wise when it came to modern applications.
Their attitude was always to buy into technology. And so chasing
Apple on the phone front was their biggest mistake. Should have
stuck to what they knew best. And now I am stuck with probably the
worst OS of all time in Win10 or use an Apple. Like that's ever
going to happen.
Nuff said. The G4 is now back in store for another year. In some
ways I wish the thing would fall over and save me the trouble of
dragging it out. At least it's in kicking distance. That always makes
me feel happy when I get angry playing Warcraft and need something
to take out my venom.
Going now.... Have to switch on a 1200 to lift my spirit.
Apple Macintosh PowerPC G4.
Win7 my weapon of choice
And just out of interest the Win7 machine
can handle a number up to 10^(20,000,000,000)
which is a very, very, very large number !!
The true purpose of any computer is to do stuff
that I could never do ... in a million years.
