Entry 2nd August 2023: Post 1: Amiga 1200 Batista - No worries.
Amiga 1200 Batista - No worries.
I showed yesterday my A1200 named Helena and how she had slightly
mellowed over the years with a yellowing of the case. Today I
feature Batista who has faired a little better. Both computers
sit within six feet of each other and stored under the exact same
conditions, and yet Batista has not suffered any case yellowing,
and only modest discolouration to some keys. And the reason.. she
probably escaped the intumescent additive to the paint process.
I have a number of A1200s that have no yellowing, particularly
the later Escom computers.
Batista originated in Bristol and would have been a computer that
I personally collected. She came from a good home as I recall and
her parting was with some regret I sense. She sat for many years
as a stock machine without a hard drive. I had respected the seal
on the case and so never opened her up.
In July 2019 I not only added a 40GB 2.5" hard drive but took her
all the way to OS3.5 and back. I decided in the end that OS3.5 was
a little heavy handed for this sweet machine.
Anyhoo in that time she has barely changed colour in any way. The
keys have a hint of yellow but only very slight and not noticeable.
The A1200 is a sturdy bit of kit and Batista feels very well made
and I just sense she functions perfectly. She certainly fired up
no problem and the floppy ticked away steadily.
I do not have any preference over which A1200 I pull from the
shelves to have a play. They are all special to me. I know each by
their name though struggle often to recall what Workbench sits
under the bonnet. That is why I take the pictures.
Batista is now safely back on her shelf and fingers crossed she
stays pristine slightly off white for many years to come.
