Amstrad 6128plus - A case of the last 8-bit CPC.
The Amstrad 6128plus released 1990 as Amstrad's last throw of the
dice with the CPC range of 8-bit computers. Using the Zilog Z80A
and Locomotive BASIC 1.1 which came on the ROM cartridge and not
installed in the machine, the 6128plus was a streamlined and sleek
white upgrade to the original CPC 6128.
Today I show the 6128plus in my review of home computer cases to
see how they have faired over the years. This machine is 31 years
old and has been in my collection for 18 years having arrived on
July 31st 2005. She is a machine that I use quite frequently and
sits on its own pedestal complete with its own dedicated monitor.
If you know the Amstrad models you will appreciate that the 6128
draws its power from the monitor having no dedicated PSU.
I do like this computer for its simplicity of use when powering
CP/M and BASIC. Readers may know that I am a fan of the compact
3 inch disc and I have spent many a day programming this machine
with nonsense text based games. The discs laying around the
computer are a testament to my fascination.
Moving to the case I would suggest you wear dark glasses to view
the images. There has been little if any yellowing of the case.
As with the Acorn reviewed yesterday I could only find modest
discolouration to some keys. She has held up very well. I keep
her draped in an old pillow case to give a little more protection
in the busy area where she sits. For me the 6128 is probably one
of my most favourite of all the 8-bit machines. No offence to
Commodore but it knocks spots off the C128 range. Not quite as
magical as the C64C but only cus I have my Commodore machines
set up with dedicated drives running GEOS. This is more a comment
about CP/M ready as with the the C128 than the C64s vast army of
support that I can dip into.
Anyhoo the Amstrad 6128plus has lasted the test of time pretty
good I would say. I did have to change the rubber band to the
drive a few years back, but other than that she's been good as
gold. I do also have the 464plus but I tend to use the original
cricket bat cus I have DDi drives and interfaces for the 3 inch.
Great machines these. Love em to death.
