Entry 9th August 2023: Post 1: Acorn Atom - A better bit of kit.

Acorn Atom - A better bit of kit.

I say a better bit of kit cus once Chris Curry had freed himself
of the shackles of Clive Sinclair he was able to pursue his idea
of building computers from kits. Famously Clive had turned his
nose up at Chris's ideas for the kit computer but eventually was
a success with his ZX80. I must say that being able to view both
machines first hand I am more impressed with the Acorn Atom. It
has certainly stood the test of time a lot better.

I'm not going to bore you today with a long discussion on why the
beginning of the 80s was such an exciting time for home computing.
Suffice to say the Acorn Atom is today a much sought after machine
simply cus it represents such a significant computer for its era.
Great men often need the support of other more humble great men.
For what ever reason Clive Sinclair could never bring it upon himself
to admit just how much he needed Chris Curry. If he had, he may
just have had his name on the BBC micro and extended the life of
the Sinclair brand.

All in the past now.

The Atom case is still as near white today as it was when I first
took possession of it back in July 2007. The computer has simply
not aged one bit. I do not test the computer these days and have
mothballed it.

ACORN ATOM Made in the UK around 1980
Keyboard is a full stroke QWERTY with 60 keys
The CPU is the 6502 running at 1MHz
Has the 6847 video display generator
Text mode is 32 x 24 / 16 x 12
Sound is from a built in small beeper
The kit in day would set you back £120 and ready built £170
