Entry 7th August 2024: Post 1: Amiga Screen Gems - Amiga in the blood.
Amiga Screen Gems - Amiga in the blood.
Going back to that 1990 era I was discussing yesterday, whilst I
did not personally own an Amiga in 1990, there was little way of
me ignoring the platform given that my dad had two Amiga 500s, and
my sister also had an Amiga 500. My second sister also increased
the ranks as she added an A600 when they were released. The Amiga
was in the blood and very popular with my family.
When I reflect on the 1990 era its probably Amiga box sets I best
recall, given that the electric stores in the day were filled with
the highly coloured Amiga offerings which adorned the windows of
these shops.
One of the best was Screen Gems which featured some of the latest
big screen releases, notably Back to the Future II. This got me
thinking cus Back to the Future II was a 1989 release , with III
as the latest for 1990. The other games in the Screen Gems pack
were definitely 1990 releases.
I decided to pull the games boxes and have a look. I do have the
two versions of Night Breed though both are the 1990 release. Sure
enough they all were 1990 releases with the exception of Back to
the Future.
I do have Back to the Future III and interestingly I own a copy
on the Amstrad CPC 3 inch disk version. All these games are in
very tiny boxes or plastic cassette style cases.
I also pulled Mean 18, Pictionary and Sensible Soccer. You could
not escape the clutches of my dad without facing off with him in
a game of golf on the Amiga. I must have spent hours playing the
very popular game Mean 18 in the day. Released in 1986. Whereas
at my sisters it would be a family round of Pictionary on the 500.
A couple of years later the house was filled with kids and their
disk boxes of dubious copies of games playing Sensible Soccer.
With so many Amiga computers in use at home I did hang on a few
years longer before acquiring one for myself. By 1993 though I too
was hooked and I've never been able to kick the habit. The machine
turned out to be a real GEM.
