Irwin accuTRAK - Parallel Tape Backup System.
So what were all the normal PC day dwellers doing in 1992. By the
looks of it backing up their 3.1 machines to tape. All 250MB.
I have to be honest in saying that I don't recall ever opening
this box but I may just have done so, the memory being so very
forgetful when it comes to really boring bits of kit.
The tape back up system featured came from the same location as
the Checkmate. I do have all the tapes for the Kennel Club records,
but I sensed I would never need to ever use them so they are in
deep storage. I found another tape to show what they kinda looked
like though the size is a little large for the unit.
So behold the Irwin accuTRAK parallel tape system that uses 250MB
back up tapes. It ran using EZ Tape Software for DOS 3.1 and was
capable of speeds up to [ wait for it ] 4mb per minute. That is a
whopping 40mb in ten minutes.
As the name infers it connects to the parallel port of the PC
and sits very neatly to one side. The design wouldn't look out
of place next to an Amiga 500, what with the ribbing.
I dread to think how much this thing cost in the day. All I can
say is that having used a tape back up on a weekly basis for a
number of years, they are both very slow to backup and very slow
to use. They were designed in such a way as to put fear into your
heart of ever needing to use the thing. So you didn't. This is
one bit of technology that I was very glad to see the 'backup' of.
If you get my drift !
