Entry 8th December 2018: Post 03: C64 - Abandoned Tapes

C64 - Abandoned Tapes

Troubles me somewhat just why the folk that used the C64, especially
for games had a habit of discarding the plastic cassette cases. It
was very common indeed to find boxed collections of kit with games
cassettes but no casings, and worse no inlays. I have this big pile
of C64 cassettes abandoned almost without any guide on how to use.
Also the tapes are so hard to stack cus loose cassette cases just
don't stand up or lay flat one on top of the other.

It is not unique to the C64. I show loose abandoned Amstrad cassettes
just the same. Placed even in special carrying cases but with the
plastic cases and cassette inlays thrown away. What was the point ?

My other issue with both C64 and Amstrad is there has been a lack
of home made tapes. Not even tapes of copies of games. Unlike the
Spectrum which I have quite a few home recorded tapes I have but
two for the C64. To which I tested here and discovered one to be
for the Spectrum and the other for the BBC. So no C64 tapes other
than official games tapes.

I do though have this mountain of tapes without plastic covers and
or sleeves. They do work. I picked out four at random and they all
worked. Sometimes you get a loading problem but the trick is to
simply wind it fully and then rewind and they generally work.

For me as a collector its a real shame I don't have some programs
created in the day by users. Nor do I have the cases for these
particular games. Never mind... I have plenty in their original
cases so all is not lost.

C64 - Abandoned Tapes

Could this be a C64 copy ?

Could this be a C64 home made program ?

Amstrad loose tapes in a case.

All the tapes still generally work.

Just need some instructions.

The odd tape does have loading issues.

Just wind and rewind and that does the trick.

Fancy a bit of Hollywood Poker.

For me the perfect retro gaming machine.

Fires up Spectrum to check that tape.

And no surprises it was a copied game.

And this turns out to be a BBC game.

And so I have no copied tapes for the C64.
Only a mountain of abandoned ones without cases.
