Spectrum 48 - Tales from the cupboard
Today I moved the expedition from the wardrobe to the cupboard in
the box room. This is a most tricky cupboard to access cus it has
a high door above the desk and is without light. Anyhoo first
thing to pop out was this Spectrum 48K all nicely boxed. I cannot
recall whether I have ever checked her working so it was time to
fire the Spectrum up and have a go.
The computer was very well presented with generally all that you
would normally expect from a boxed Spectrum. I wasn't at all
surprised not to find manuals inside as I tend to remove them
along with any disks/tapes etc before placing in storage. My
concern as ever was the melting nature of wires and polystyrene.
No great issues though I did place a separating tissue between
the base wires and the manuals just in case.
I tested the computer and whilst working was missing a few keys
especially top left of the keyboard. Nothing much to do other than
get a new membrane which I ordered straight away. So when it
arrives I will try again and see if we can get the Spectrum 48K
fully functioning and back on her feet again.

Be aware that having a large collection does involve a lot of
checking boxed and stored kit to make sure it's OK. I try for the
most part to cycle through this at least once a year. The
frequency can be higher depending on the age of the kit. This
box storage cupboard is for the low risk items that I rarely need
to check so once a year would suffice. So more to come.
