I am not a retro gamer. I really struggle going back to the earlier
games cus they are just so bad. I certainly played most in the day
but as I progressed with gaming the latest version is kinda where
I always wanted to be. Only this week I have been playing the much
later version of Tomb Raider by Crystal Dynamics, and in no way
did it make me want to dig out the PlayStation 1 and fire up the
very first in the epic era.
So when I say here that some of these games are my favourites I
probably mean just a couple. Arcade Snooker and the adventures of
Marvin. The rest are just in a clear perspex case that I refer to
as my favourite cover disk games. Mostly cus they have been sitting
next to the A1200 since the early nineties.
There is value to having the disks, especially the Amiga Computing
ones, cus with a fistful of cover disks from the era from this mag
you are able to fashion A500 Workbench disks. Each disk booted into
a mini Workbench of its own complete with SHELL/CLI and also had
very basic disk management tools. With a little customisation these
disks can give you a very reasonable working Workbench disk. This
I have always found the most fun thing about using the Amiga OS.
The games are split in A500 and A1200 and obviously some will work
only on one or the other. I did copy Aladdin but it failed to boot
so I half inched a copy from EAB but its not ADF. All the other
disks I copied from my own collection and are in ADF format. Most
games come with instructions and for the most part boot from the
disk.
I deliberately included a couple of shareware and PD games to show
just how basic they are. I certainly spent very little time playing
each of these games, as they were real hard work and very little
fun.
Anyhoo, you can decide, just bang them into the emulator or transfer
to a real Amiga and try them out. Personally I would play Dragon
Tiles if I had nothing else to do. That or Arcade Snooker. Depends
if you have an A1200 set up. Dragon tiles can be played on anything
I would guess. It is a very colourful version of Mah-jong. Great
game.
I show the article for DEFENDA which for all the talk of the magazine
turned out to be pretty poor. But then this type of game has never
really interested me.
I would certainly recommend starting to build up a collection of
the Amiga Computing early disks, especially if you have an A500.
They are such a joy to have around and are way more useful than
you can imagine.
I better go... Time to play some Final Fantasy XIV online which
sadly will not fit on an Amiga DD disk. You have fun.
