ScuzzBlog: Diaries December 2024

Entry 1st December 2024: Post 2: Microsoft Copilot - Cortana has been deprecated.

Microsoft Copilot - Cortana has been deprecated.

Two things trouble me regarding computers generally and they are
the intrusive nature of software and the way intrusive software
gathers your information and monitors your activities. Intrusive
in this context means software that makes decisions for itself
and alters content without asking your permission. It also means
software that communicates with its originator at will, forwards
data and logs without request, receives content and updates to
suit the providers discretion and never offers a signing off
process for modifications or change of use.

Trust me when I say that Microsoft believe fully that the software
on your system is their property and as an end user you are only
borrowing it from them.

What does this mean? It means that Microsoft 'do' monitor your
activity history which includes usage of apps and services, the
files you open and the websites you browse. So pretty much every
footprint you make as you use your computer.

They do promise they will share this with nobody, but when you
are the size of Microsoft that is a hefty slice of the technical
community.

This angers me a lot and has always been an annoyance that over
the years I have tolerated.

So imagine my anger to discover a strange icon appear on my taskbar.
Historically the taskbar has been reserved for those items you as
a user choose to incorporate on said taskbar. I was very annoyed
some while back when having removed Edge and Bing there appeared
a Bing Search bar on the taskbar that you cannot remove. AND NOW
I have Copilot, which like the inflated namesake in Airplane I
quickly let the air out of its annoying pointless logo by moving
it off the taskbar. I am currently researching how to remove it
completely.

Note the previous rendition of this ChatBot was described as a
disaster by the experts and quickly postponed. Sadly it is back
and as an integrated part of the Bing Edge browser I assume it's
here to stay.

I am very troubled by Windows 11, more so than Windows 10. I use
the latter as little as I can. Sadly I need the security of a
modern system to undertake my financial activities. I do not have
any love for Apple and so am forced to use Microsoft. However I
am minded next year to go offline. I have around 8 XP machines
including a laptop that can service easily my 'productivity'
software for writing, art, image manipulation, music creation
and webpage creation and site editing. I will continue to use
the Win7 machine until Norton stop supporting the software but
use it without browsing.

I also intend next year getting a PC to install Linux and try my
best to understand how it works.

Suffice to say I have had my fill of Microsoft. To be honest it
is hard these days to decide who is worse, Microsoft or Google.
The activities of Google trouble me most.

It isn't hard staying off the grid. I already spend a good period
of my time offline. The XP machine gets fired up every day for
file management, data backups and printing. With the Amigas in use
and the PlayStation and XBOX360 active I have no problems staying
MS offline for the majority of the day. If MS want to monitor my
hand drawn and written journals they are more than welcome to
have a try.

And trust me this is my world, my rules and nobody, not even
Microsoft will ever change that.

Yesterday I was offered an upgrade by SeaArt, one of the bits of
software I use for AI. I was troubled it did not come in on my usual
email but on the email I use for Google. I fired up SeaArt and
tried to log in. I was refused. I tried again, no luck. I was
then told that SeaArt no longer accepted private email addresses.
I had to use Google, FaceBook etc. No problem. I removed the
software from the computer. All these processes are just designed
to get hold of your private information. So SeaArt... go fish.

This kind of stuff is very important to me. I have my doors to
this house locked by my keys and if you wanna come in you gotta
make an appointment. What MS and Google do is believe they have
the right to set up shop in your own home, and then have the
right to go rummaging through all your stuff. Well not here.

Enough... Time to play on the PSOne.

Microsoft Copilot - Cortana has been deprecated.

The message on the app for Cortana says she has been deprecated.
This now is the new logo for Copilot. I just see the letters FU.
