Amiga 500 - That hot glue mystery.
I had intended using my Amiga 500 machine number 30 that was victim
to a hot glue attack, but sadly it has gotten itself stuck again
and I would have to start taking her apart to remedy the issue.
A long long long time ago I purchased two Amigas from a young lady
who knew nothing of the computers as they were her grandfathers.
I sense the guy had gotten fed up with the A500 trying to make it
into an ECS machine and got hold of some A500 Plus parts and built
himself a machine. I say this cus the A500 Plus that came with the
hot glue A500 has a different base section to the top case.
Both machines have a rear switch with the one for a ROM switcher and
the other to switch on and off the RAM board.
For some reason, having modified the A500 to utilise the 1MB AGNUS,
by adding extra onboard RAM, a GARY riser and modifications to use
the trapdoor memory as CHIP, he went on to hot glue everything. He
glued pretty much all the chips. I mean everything. It is a mess.
Note the AGNUS is the 8372A on the 6A board so already 1MB.
What is most odd is that if you take the RAM card out of the
computer it still shows 1MB CHIP and 1MB FAST... with no card.
I did actually fix the problem last time by reseating the GARY and
then I got a correct reading for the memory. However, when I put
the machine on today it is again showing 1mb CHIP and FAST.
So I put the computer back into storage.
The truth is the hack required to increase the CHIP memory on
older machines is not worth the risk. There is a chance the AGNUS
socket will collapse and you still need a switcher I think so you
can use the ECS chip with a 2.0 ROM. Sure you can go for a 2.04
but you really could do with the ECS Denise. But then what about
using the machine for 1.3 games.
Better to get an A500 Plus or just save for an A1200 and leave
the A500 alone. The guy that did this hack finally bit the bullet
and got the A500 Plus with the ROM switcher. Made perfect sense.
There is probably a modern add-on you can use, but I really
wouldn't know about that.

this issue, given that the guy before me used glue
in the end as his only solution. It looked like a
final straw kinda act out of desperation.
