Entry 10th December 2024: Post 1: SONY PlayStation - 30 years old.
SONY PlayStation - 30 years old.
I hadn't realised that the PlayStation was thirty years old on
4th December. Thing is that I wasn't much into consoles at the
time of its birth. I was more likely playing SimCity 2000 on the
Amiga 1200. It actually took until 1997 for me to buy a SONY PS1.
And as many know it was primarily to play Tomb Raider.
The SONY was hooked up to the SONY Trinitron and I must have spent
so many wasted hours playing late into the night. The primary
causes for my late nights was Tomb Raider I, II and III, Metal
Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, Silent Hill,
Final Fantasy XII, XIII, FIFA etc. The very last game I played on
the PS1 was Fear Effect in Feb 2001. After that I moved to the
PlayStation 2 which eventually fell over, literally, and I had to
repair myself.
The PS2 is still the console that I have played the most and I have
all of the classic titles. During that time I also dabbled in the
XBOX and Dreamcast, but the PS2 always took centre stage in here.
The wait for the PS3 was truly painful. Mostly cus I wanted the
latest version of Final Fantasy which was endlessly delayed. So
much so that I upgraded a PC and started playing World of Warcraft.
The online gaming pretty much killed the console. I don't think I
touched the thing from around 2012.
It was 2019 that saw a resurgence of activity with Lightning Returns
and HitMan. I managed to burn the original PS3 out and was forced
to buy a replacement. At the time I obtained a later fat version
without the backward compatibility. This eventually was replaced
with an older fat with the lift up flap. I have three now.
The PS4 was late to the party mostly cus of the online gaming. It
took Yorha2B and Nier Automata to coax me back onto the console.
Sadly I have have become less enamoured by modern gaming trends to
shooters and even though I struggled through all the latest Lara
games, I have been reluctant to buy a PS5.
It is possible that Stellar Blade may tempt me back into the SONY
PlayStation world. Thing is these days I am more likely to be on
the XBOX 360 still, as the catalogue of games is so good. Of
late I have been playing the Tomb Raider Trilogy.
So thirty years of the SONY PlayStation. Amazing. The console really
was the turning point for video games. The ease at which you could
insert the CD and play so much very good content of way more modern
a feel, was magical. I would buy the magazines for cover CDs and
be treated to an endless stream of gaming joy. The SONY consoles
have always been a fun activity, and there hasn't been a time since
1997 for me that I haven't had a PlayStation set up next to the PC
here with the games galore stacked very colourfully next to the
console.
The console introduced a legacy of gaming titles that will live on
to my death. I am sure they will still be loved by future generations
and even expanded and improved. The console was never a computer
and I never confused its purpose. I think that SONY have been very
good in maintaining its role as a console. I'm sure the PS5 follows
that tradition.
With my hand on my heart I can honestly say the PlayStation has given
me oodles of happy days. Let's hope there are plenty more.
