Entry 19th December 2024: Post 1: Amiga 500 Plus - Or simply Computer No 23.

Amiga 500 Plus - Or simply Computer No 23.

Generally when I come across an Amiga 500 Plus that hasn't been
accessed for a while I try to open up and check the battery area.
This machine hadn't been checked for around four years by the
looks of it, though I don't record all the times I have the machine
on the bench.

This A500 Plus sits inside an A500 carcass. I pretty much built
this computer from the ground up using purchased and salvaged bits.
The computer was home to a GVP side car for many years and sat in
the workshop. I spent many a happy hour decrunching and testing
demo disks on this machine.

I decided to mothball the computer in favour of an actual A500
so I could better test A500 demo disks.

Not sure where I got the motherboard from. Possibly a purchase off
Ebay. The battery would have been removed at that time, unless
removed when she arrived. Both floppy and keyboard were added to
the machine which used an old busted case that someone had broken
the plastic cover adjacent the Esc key.

Having checked the battery area I was comforted that the very small
traces of corrosion were limited to the same area as before and
little if any further corrosion had occurred. Happy that the machine
was OK I labelled as such and put her back in her storage space. I
have a small book that has a graphical image of the stored A500s
and A500 Plus machines. They generally are standing vertical with
the floppy port uppermost. Care is taken to cover the computers in
tissue and have them leaning against each other on the top case
section and not pressing onto the keys. I then cover a whole run of
computers with a cloth. I avoid heat, light and dust. With well
over thirty of these Amiga 500/Plus machines they represent the
largest body of any model. I currently have just one machine that
doesn't work, which is set to one side as it represents work in
hand.

Interestingly I wasn't actually planning on working on the A500Plus
today, I was in the corner of the large room trying to find another
bit of kit but had to move the Plus out the way to get to it. I
did also find another GVP sidecar which I need to now take a look
at. That is how it goes here. One project prompts another.

Happy days.
