A500 Plus - Failed my GVP challenge.
I had got quite excited about firing up this GVP sidecar I found
the other day. So when I pulled The 500 Plus I was using the other
day onto the bench I was all set for a GVP challenge. Sadly that
is where it all ended.... Never mind.
I have several of the GVP sidecars and a few set up with A500s.
However, I do have a couple that are dodgy to say the least. The
biggest problem I have with these sidecars is the power supply
which tends to fall over due to capacitor failure.
This particular sidecar sadly has a failed hard drive. It does
have 8MB RAM which is very useful. The biggest problem is that I
just can't undo the last screw. I even bought a drill bit to unscrew
the thing but all it did was make it worse. I am loathed to drill
the screw out completely for fear of damaging the case. So that is
how things remain. Utter failure.
Like I say I am not shy of a few GVP Impact Series II A500 HD+
units. I even have a new one still in its original box. Plus there
is also the GVP Turbo 40MHz. My most prized machine sits on the
500 in the Workshop and she gets used a lot.
The design of the GVP sidecar compliments the A500 and looks very
suitable expanding the A500 in all the right ways. Like I say it
gives a good RAM boost and with the SCSI port and hard drive also
gives much needed expansion possibilities and storage.
The unit is very quiet generally. I can barely hear the drive when
it is on and its easy to forget you have it still powered.
Sorry about that. I was quite looking forward to mucking around
with the hard drive. I have spent many a happy hour uninstalling
and reinstalling 2.04. That is why it's beneficial having the A500
Plus available. The two items of kit do work very well together.
PS. The label is from 2003, 21 years ago, and at that time I
obviously was able to open the case cus I note a wire came off.
