Entry 31st December 2024: Post 1: Decrunching DMS - In the round.

Decrunching DMS - In the round.

I mentioned the other day how I played Arcade Snooker whilst I
de-crunched DMS files on the 4000. A few years back I decided to
unarchive a whole load of DMS files on a number of CDs. The disc
contents were not labelled other than a reference number and there
was literally thousands and thousands of the things. The CD label
suggested all the files were PD disks but in truth a lot were
official software and games. One was even a full copy of WB 1.3.

The DMS disks created were of the Amiga 1000 era and predominantly
1.1 and 1.2.

Over the months that I de-crunched the DMS files I built up an ADF
archive on the Amiga 4000 which I then copied and transferred to
the ZIP on an adjacent A1200 and then onto a USB via a PC and then
finally up here onto this Win7 machine. I still have the archive
which amounts to 100s of ADF images in a number of directories.

The process involved me using the A4000 and DMS de-crunching to
floppy disk. I then tested on an A500 sitting next to the A4000.
Satisfied that the disk worked I would then ADF image the disk and
then place in an archive and copy via Parnet to the 1200.

Today I copied over a couple of dozen of the files and fired up
on the emulator. I don't think I have looked at these since I first
created the disk images some years ago. I captured a few images from
the first couple or dozen and feature them here. Not particularly
exciting and most certainly for the most not PD disks. Saying that
I do recall the next couple of CDs I de-crunched all tended to be
more PD related. A lot were demo disks and intros.

I did enjoy my time de-crunching disks. I certainly enjoyed playing
Arcade Snooker and Sensible World of Soccer.

I have included a series of images I created in 2021 showing the
circle of Amigas rotating anticlockwise from the A500 with the GVP
to the A4000/040 then onto the first A1200 with the Parnet and the
ZIP, then to the games machine A1200 playing Arcade Snooker and
finally over to the other side to my beloved A1200 from 1993. The
circle of Amigas are still busy and set up as the pictures. Nothing
changes here.

I do have a few copies of the archive on various machines so it
is not likely it will disappear in my lifetime at least. What happens
after that is anyone's guess. I'm sure the contents are replicated
all over the web.

Anyway I assume from the noise it must be 2025. Another year and
another large window of retro opportunities opens up. Onward.
