Philips Portable Tape Recorder Type 4200
A few years back I featured my 1962 Philips EL 3585 portable tape
recorder. This was a gift to me in 1970 and was used extensively
for many years. Time was we had but tape recorders and record
players to keep us amused, and nothing stereo just your simple
tone and volume controls to vary the sound. One thing is for sure,
you actually got real kit for your money, none of this wafer thin
nonsense you get today.
Anyhoo I was always a little saddened at how the old Philips had
faired over the years. Not surprising given the abuse the poor
thing had, being portable and all that. So imagine my excitement
when a similar tape machine came up on the Bay. So I snapped the
much newer version from the heady years of 1969. Just to put this
in context, my first tape recorder dated from the 1962 at a time
when John Glenn was making the first manned orbital flight around
the earth, and the second tape recorder from 1969 at a time when
Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon. Both events I recall
very well, well not so much the first.
Whilst I was able to use the newer tape machine I decided not to
tax the motor too much as this is quite a fragile bit of kit. So
I took the images and then glass cased the tape recorder with my
other. The machine came with its carry bag and manual which I had
never seen before. The carry bag is a little tight and kinda made
me think twice about taking her out again.
Few things can spark so many memories than the actual physical
presence of an object from the past. I sat for some time perusing
and handling the tape recorder. It just oozed 1960's goodness.
A bit of Marvin Gaye comes to mind ...Too busy thinking about my baby ..
