Entry 9th February 2022: Post 1: Amiga Demo Public Domain Packages.
Amiga Demo Public Domain Packages.
One of the ploys used by Amiga sales companies was to package up
sets of useful disks to bundle with Amiga computers. Very often
these disks were simply demos and utilities extracted from PD disk
sets like the Fred Fish Library Disks.
The disks sometimes carried the suppliers name and also bundled
with the more official looking computer box titles. The marketing
of special boxed editions of the Amiga was very common in the UK
and I know that David Pleasance was instrumental in the success
of promoting and selling the Amiga in this way.
One set that has been hunted down these last few years has been
the Silica set of ten PD disks. I have to confess I hadn't realised
until I looked last night that I had in my possession 9 out of the
10 disks. Today I was able to complete the set with PD disk #4.
Sadly the download disk had a read/right error. Fortunately I am
well versed in fixing disks. First I tracked down the busted file
which resided on FredFish Library Disk#29. Aegis DrawDemo. So I
mended the disk and added to the completed set.
I have any number of similar sets, my favourite being the Hobbyte
packs that were themed and had a great kids set. The Disc Company
went one better and branded a set that accompanied the Starter
Packs for the A500. The software provided was in no way light in
weight and carried full versions of award winning software.
Anyhoo! I am sure I have Disk#4 somewhere here, but for now I was
grateful of the bones of the disk, albeit I still needed to do a
bit of work putting it together. Do remember that an ADF is not
guarantee of a complete disk. Far from it as the ADF will simply
copy all the disk image, even the checksum errors.
Here is a list of those disks, which I have to say were pretty
dreadful. There were one or two gems, but truthfully they were
very poor. Way better just getting a fist full of PD disks or a
CD from say 17BIT off Ebay. Better still a 1000 fish disks.
That list ...
