Windows 3.1 - PC Disk Collecting.
I commented the other day that it wouldn't be a bad idea to build
an old Win 3.1 PC and play around with DOS and old cover disks
from the early nineties. Though quite challenging I would suggest
that with all the older kit in existence it's probably very doable.
For my 3.1 endeavours I use the IBM Ps/1 or the IBM Luggable orange
screen machine. Both are equally as dull but I guess dull can still
be entertaining.
I was searching for some XTREE Gold disks for a blog I'm putting
together and I dragged out a full drawer of early nineties PC disks
to sift through. I was sure I had featured these before but not
being able to find the images on the blog I decided to photograph
a fist full and feature them today.
This collection of PC disks was the property of one man who also
owned the Amiga 1500 Checkmate that I have. It is a wonderful set
of disks which are a very good example of 'nerd' heaven early 90s
style.
Windows 3.1 and Workgroups was an interesting era being pre Win95
and the full blown internet period. It also was a time that the
Amiga and Commodore were closing their doors for the last time.
Making the comparison with other platforms makes for interesting
fun and most is on 3.5" floppy if you're not up for setting up the
5.25". Like I say I bit the bullet and did fit a 5.25" to the IBM.
Anyhoo that was that for the early nineties. Not as stimulating as
mucking around with real computers, but then even Windows has a
place in retro history.
PS I didn't feature all the disks nor many of the magazine cover
disks. Just a sprinking.
