Entry 8th January 2019: Post 01: Rare C64 C'T 65SC816 Turbo Card 4Mhz.
Rare C64 C'T 65SC816 Turbo Card 4Mhz.
This little baby was sold to me many moons ago as an accelerator
for the C64. I was pretty sceptical at the time. Unfortunately the
card will not fit in a standard C64 without building some kind of
case spacer as the keyboard conflicts with the card. Also the
actual 65SC816 and EPROM are missing. Quite a neat little beast
and I guess in its day turned a few heads.
This card when fully populated runs at 4 MHz and has a 16-Bit CPU.
Technically what that means is that it runs a stock C64 faster by
a factor of four. Yes !! four time faster. It also has the ability
to quadruple the memory capacity due to the CMOS processor 65SC816.
This processor is a further development of the 6502 family. This
includes the CPU set, 16-Bit wide registers and the ability to
address up to 16 MB RAM.
Quote 'The RAM of the C64 is on a card from simulated in a fast CMOS
memory, only when accessing the VIC, SID and the I / O units of the
C64 does the card slow down its working speed and decrease to the
normal value. There is another CMOS memory in the address space of
the 16-bit processor, which can be equipped with up to 256 KB.
This RAM can be used as working memory by 16-bit software.'

Sadly the card is missing the 65SC816 and the EPROM. Interestingly
Western Digital did continue to develop the chip.
