ScuzzBlog: Diaries January 2020

Entry 16th January 2020: Post 02: Why I hate Windows 10.

Why I hate Windows 10.

01: There is nothing wrong with Windows 7. For the 'real' computer
enthusiast who loves computing, Windows 7 is the last in a blood
line of real computers. What we have with Win 10 is not an OS ...
it is a glorified mobile phone entertainment application.

02: Setting up the login. The endless cycle.

I know it was my fault, but hey I have switched on so many new computers
I can be forgiven for doing stuff on auto pilot. When I had the DeLL
machine the launch process asked me for a password and email. I hadn't
realised it wanted a Windows Outlook account email. So now I get an
error message each time I switch on cus it cannot validate the email
address. What is worse I cannot do anything cus the useless junk that
is Win10 couldn't first detect that a btinternet.com wasn't an Outlook
account name and I cannot change cus I can't log in. So I go through
this endless cycle.

And that from the very first thing I did. And it's still **cked up.

03: Apps.. endless bloody apps. I have spent like hours unravelling the
ravelling, deleting uninstalling, removing these junk items from the
computer. They are on the desktop and fill the pointless menu. If I
wanted these things I would go hunt them down. Just an example of the
pointless junk that already has littered my registry with unwanted files.

AND they all phone bloody home. GO AWAY !!!

04: What is going on ? I have an Ethernet port at my feet and historically
I have grown to monitor my computer activity by watching the lights.
With Win7 I can almost tell you what is happening by the light activity.
I know when Norton is busy etc. It was better with Win95 on dial-up as I
controlled the activity. With Win98 I could do a simple search from a
two button click to display each and every file changed on a single day.
So if I got a lot of light activity I would check all the files that had
been activated and maybe modified.

I like knowing what is going on. It is my computer. NOT WINDOWS'.

And now when I switch on the Win10 machine the port lights never stop flashing.
For the second day running I have had the bloody thing on for three hours
and the lights are crazy bonkers and streaming endlessly. WHAT THE **CK FOR !!

Again ' GO AWAY '.

05: Software incompatibility. I use a few favourites. They are all junked.
Win 10 doesn't like them. So what is more important... my beloved software
or Windows 10. No competition.

06: The monitor. I would like to use the same monitor for Win7 as 10 but it
only has one DVi. So I got a HDMI and connected to the NVIDIA. The minute
I connect the login screen comes up and then freezes. The mouse is not usable
and the keyboard inactive.

Guess what.. the guide says change settings. Sorry... how do I change the
settings if I can't get into the OS. I have no way of getting the Win10
to work with HDMI off the NVIDIA. It works with DVi but like I say I
only have one DVi on the machine.

So why not get a switcher. I had a very bad experience with a KVM that
not only burnt out a monitor and graphics card, but also destroyed my
computer motherboard and PSU. Once bitten.

07: Win10 is a mess. There is no logic to any of the menus. They are a
mess simple as that. All over the place. And has various themes and
styles and differing button systems. There is no common theme or
concept. This is what happens when you begin a process and then just
keep adding and adding and adding stuff without going back and
removing and editing the earlier elements to suit the newer ideas.
It's what you get when you have hundreds of different components all
plugged into the same jumble of parts.

I am a designer. I am a qualified designer. I am an architect. I
fully understand the issue of constraints. The skill is taking all
the parts and then creating a vocabulary and a unified style and
concept. This should be based on a simply philosophy. Windows has never
had a guiding philosophy, cus Gates preferred to acquire technology
from others and shoe horn into the OS. That is how Windows works.

08: Spyware. Windows 10 has so many doors leading into the OS that I
have no confidence what so ever that the intrusions are not going to
impact on what I do. In simple terms we go back to my not knowing what
and who has access to my computer. I cannot monitor the activity or
fully trust the controls. It is a case of who is in control.

I do not trust Windows 10. Prove me wrong and give me a SIMPLE tool
that displays all online activity and explains the flashing port hub
lights. All these applications have a phone home mechanism.

09: The Windows shop stuff. In your face. Go away. This is why I junked the
XBOX Elite. It wanted a Live account. So I did my usual trick of creating a
unique email account just for Live and waited for the flood. So every mail
that came in on that account must have come from Windows. And the
stuff just flooded in. So I deleted the email account, dumped Live... which
was very tricky to close. And then put the Elite back in its box.

My personal privacy is that important to me. It's like having a locked desk
that holds all your treasured private papers and then giving MS the keys.

10: The whole OS appears and feels alien to me. More a touchy screen
mobile phone entertainment centre that kinda is shoe horned into a
disfigured and mangled version of Windows classic. The whole mess thing
comes into play again. I've had two years of tinkering and trust me I just
cannot wait to switch off this junk.

I do not have a mobile phone. I do not use apps. I do not have a Fartbook
or other social media account. I AM NOT INTERESTED. I love computers.
Windows 10 should only facilitate the use of my computer. Instead it
attempts to take control of my computer and makes no apology for it.
The computer is mine. MY COMPUTER. I am in charge here. I choose to
invite you in, and not the other way around.

Windows 10 is INTRUSIVE. This process started with the changes made
with XP when MS opened the ports and shipped their product with no
safety mechs to prevent intrusion. Only later did they add the firewall.
That demonstrated just how little they had considered security. And
fundamentally this is the same company.

You lost my trust then and sorry it never will be coming back.

So what are my choices. I can't use Win 10 cus it is crap. Seriously. The reason so many people are still using Win7 is cus they just struggle moving onto this junk. I could run the gauntlet and hope Norton pick up everything. Trouble is that Norton will remove support. That is what killed Win98 for me. I can take the Win7 offline and use the Win 10 for email and browsing. That is very frustrating for me. Means I need two monitors. Doesn't work. Give up with Windows and use a Mac. [ So funny ]. Better not go there. That's like sticking your 'nob' in a blender and wondering why it was such a bad idea. Man do I hate Apple. And Linux just isn't going to cut it. Tried it. Too complicated. And so who do I blame. I blame Commodore. But hey. I don't have a solution yet. Other than giving up and trying something else. Work in progress. Suffice to say this was written using my Win7 machine, which for all MS faults is probably the best they ever created. Just a shame they dumped it in the trash instead of updating and upgrading with modest tweaks. If it aint broke. PS: The term for junk here is reserved for those things that I have no real use for and which by definition serve no purpose. What is more they add no value to my collective good and only serve to hinder and annoy. On every count Windows 10 meets my criteria of 'junk'. I have been trying since March 2017 to use this Win10 machine and each time my view is the same. UPDATE After removing and deleting most of the apps on the DELL machine I found that the network was showing a constant download to the computer of between 3.5 and 7 MB/s constant. This would explain why the port hub lights were flickering all the time. I did some digging around and was advised to switch off the Windows Store/Shop App. So I toggled off and problem solved. The port hub lights went off and the network was now reading 0.0 KB/s download. Kinda proves my point. You can junk most of the Apps but some are obviously embedded into the crappy OS and don't have an uninstall. I also removed from the computer the Windows Office suite of software, the Drop-box crap and Cloud 'one' various applications. Like I would trust anyone on a cloud with my data. I removed all the games and social media junk plus disabled pretty much every other App. There are none on the desktop and now very few in the menu. Last night it also updated the computer to the latest version which took around an hour having been stuck at 27% for a very long time. Fortunately Norton renewed my year long subscription to Win7 and I have decided against better advice to stay with the Win7 machine until both Firefox and Norton remove support for Win7. [ Chuckles ]. I did take Win98 to the wire before I moved over to crappy XP. That reduced my time with XP to just five years. Still a very long time with a very poor operating system. Worst years for me with Microsoft. I do not look forward to moving over to Win10 eventually. I spent a good time with it yesterday and it truly is the biggest load of junk that I have ever had the misfortune of using. And that is saying something given that I used both Windows Millennium and the dreadful OS on the Mac G4, which gave for me a whole new meaning to the words SLOW and Shite.

Why I hate Windows 10.
