Entry 19th January 2020: Post 01: Picasso IV - A4000D Heaven.
Picasso IV - A4000D Heaven.
My adventure into the world of the A4000d and high end Amiga life
was relatively short lived but quite intense for the few years I
dabbled. In the early 2000s I was lucky enough to have acquired
a Picasso IV graphics card for my newly repaired A4000d. The
Amiga was in a sorry state when it arrived and I replaced the
motherboard and inserted a number of cards.
I added hard drives and IO extenders for the modem. Soon I was
surfing and doing all my mail on the A4000d/040. Time then dial-
up was all I had and so the A4000d became my primary tool for
being online for a while.
Many many nights, weeks and months I sank into the Amiga realm
and I have to say I have incredibly fond memories of the time.
With broadband came better options for the PC and in time I
drifted away from the A4000d finding the PC more easy to use
for surfing and the like. Shame really.
And so the A4000d still sits with all the tools I had installed
for the day. I have lost the dial-up connection and so removed
the modem. She is kinda locked in time with a snapshot of Amiga
life as it was in 2003-2005. I do still use the machine though
less and less these days as sitting below her is another A4000d
040 with my full Amiga archive.
I use a Mitsubishi monitor with the Picasso IV and it still
has the best screen for any of my Amigas. A real joy.

This card is a Zorro II/III auto sensing graphics card. On the
board is a pixel clock at 135 MHz ( 8bit) , 85 MHz (16bit) and
85 MHz (24bit). The board comes with its own flicker fixer.
Additionally it has a local inline PCI bus which supports a
number of add-on cards. I have featured these cards over the
last few weeks [ Piablo, Paloma and Concierto ]. To top it off
the card also has CD-ROM input connector and flash ROM controller.
To use the card the Picasso96 software needs to be installed
which enables all the wonderful screen resolutions for the PC
monitors.
With my 4000d/040 I use a mouse adaptor so I can use the PC
style of mouse.
