Entry 16th January 2021: Post 1: Amiga 500 Plus - GVP sidecar check.
Amiga 500 Plus - GVP sidecar check.
Sometimes things don't go according to plan and when I set out the
other day to check three of my GVP sidecars I certainly hadn't
anticipated the fun and games I had with the GARY. All this is
documented in a recent blog. And so I finally got round to
checking the GVP drives and this then threw up another issue.
I need to first explain that I have half a dozen of these drives
and it is just not possible to keep them all hooked up to an A500
or similar. I have one set up in the Workshop only. Trouble with
old drives is they have a habit of locking up, for good. To stop
this from happening it helps to give them a spin out for a while.
To test the machines I chose to use the A500 Plus and first I
checked the memory which had been the subject of a recent thread
on the forums. The machine shows the ECS AGNUS and Denise and is
registering the AGNUS as 2 MEG. It also shows up as 2MB on the
memory test in SysInfo.
The first drive I tested has a 1.3 installation and simply had on
the drive the WB 1.3. I then tried the floppy with my very own
BayBench and that worked from clicking the icon but failed when I
tried to boot from the disk. Took me a while to sort this out and
as is often the case it is the subject of a further blog.
Next sidecar has a GVP very own install and shows this from the
boot screen. I have never messed with this drive which has the
contents left there by a previous owner. Worked just fine.
Lastly I tried a drive that has got a broken hard drive. The drive
just refuses to boot even though it tries to go through the old
start process. The thing about this drive is that it has 8MB of
very useful memory on the drive. Even if these drives fail to run
they very often have useful memory that you can use. The previous
drive for instance had 4MB memory. Great for file management and
the like.
Anyhoo... they were all working fine as was my version of BayBench
which I corrected to work with the 2.04WB. All done and tucked
away for possibly another year... or not. Who knows.
