ScuzzBlog: Diaries January 2025

Entry 5th January 2025: Post 1: Street Fighter - Cracking Scene.

Street Fighter - Cracking Scene.

Following on from the recent blogs regarding disk circulation and
the way the community spread the Amiga word via the various 'meets'
I thought I would give a mention to the cracking crew. What better
way to demonstrate the skills of these guys than attempt to run
three sets of dubious disks for the game Street Fighter II.

First a word about the pictures. They are not good. I did them
without tripod in less than complimentary light. But hey.

I can't believe it has been five years since I did my blog regarding
Street Fighter. I recalled that in the box were three sets of disks
that were cracked versions, along with the actual disks. So do the
disks still work after thirty years? Only one way to find out.

OK on the screen promoting the cracking of the game disks Crystal
are making reference to the The Party to be held in Aars, Denmark and
featuring CRYSTAL - Silents - Anarchy. .. ' everyone from the
cracking and demo-scene will be there '. 1992 no less.

When you collect as many disks as I do you are bound to come across
disks with cracked copies of games. I tend to keep them separate
from my main disks in a series of towers of disks. The mountain is
quite high.

Onward... So did the disks work ?

All three suffered from one main issue and one with a second issue.

After loading the first notification screens the game let you pick
who you wanted to fight and fight with but refused to go past the
next disk selection screen. In addition the third set of disk did
have graphical problems, that looked like a compatibility issue.
I was running the game on an A1200.

I checked the original game and after the selection of your opponent
there should have been a disk selection option.

I acquired a dubious copy from the internet of the game and ran the
emulator and sure enough the game throws up a disk requester after
the selection of your opponent. Interestingly the internet copy
was exactly the cracked disks that I have.

Back to the cracked disk on the A1200. What I decided to do was
place disk 2 in an external drive. This worked. The game then
requested disk 4. So all three games now worked.

In respect of the graphical glitch I moved to the box room and
ran the game on the Amiga 500 and sure enough the problem vanished.
The graphical glitch was due to an ECS version of the game that
failed under the AGA chipset of the A1200.

So even after thirty three years all three sets of disks worked
albeit in a dubious way. I guess I could destroy the disks but
in truth they represent a potent aspect of the Amiga scene of the
day and as such I'll keep them.

Street Fighter II isn't a classic game. If you want to play the
game I suggest you play Super Street Fighter II cus the game
introduces the gaming legend Cammy .. 'woof woof'.

Street Fighter - Cracking Scene.

Three sets of cracked disks.

Crystal cracked.

The cracked game refused to go any further.

The official game throws up a disk requester
at the point the cracked game halts.

The game downloaded from the internet and
used on the emulator provides the disk requester.

OK problem solved. Simply place disk 2 in an
external drive when first loading the game.

Next up that graphics glitch.

For this I used an Amiga 500.

And the problem simply vanished.

All three sets of cracked disks worked.

Time to put those pesky disks away and go
play Super Street Fighter II with Cammy.
