Entry 11th January 2025: Post 1: Online Gaming Debris.
Online Gaming Debris.
I started playing online games about eighteen years ago and I must
have clocked up an unhealthy amount of hours during that time. The
thing about online games is that you need an online server to make
it work. Obvious I know, but with that reliance comes a certain
amount of risk.
Before I get into that here is a potted history of my time online.
My online gaming started with Guildwars and Nightfall which I
enjoyed very much. So much so I purchased Guildwars II including
the special headset and mouse. I was quite enthusiastic.
I had purchased World of Warcraft at about the same time but did
not load the game up until 2008. I needed to upgrade a computer
first. Whilst TBC had been released I did complete Classic or
Vanilla a number of times before purchasing TBC. I have since that
date purchased all expansions and had an active subscription since
2008. I am currently playing The War Within.
I then tried Star Trek and Star Wars which were both dreadful and
recently had a notification regarding the Star Wars account that
if I didn't login they would delete the account. Star Trek was so
bad I dumped that shortly after release.
Rift was my next heavy game and for over a year I played it to
death. I loved the game, but sadly the later expansions were dull.
Next up I launched into Tera and played the game up to the point
of it being taken offline a couple of years ago. To say I loved
this game is an understatement. I sank way too many hours of my
life playing Tera.
Archeage was the next game to absorb all my time and this game was
more of a way of life. At one stage I had two accounts and managed
some very large farms. It really was like working in a game. I did
love it though and the scenery was so tranquil and relaxing. The
game was taken offline last year and I had an active account up
to its demise.
I fiddled with Blade and Soul an Black Desert along with Eve and
one or two others but nothing serious.
League of Legends has been pretty dominant this last five years as
love the whole world of LOL from the Worlds and splits and esports.
The characters and music are quite magical.
Final Fantasy Online has been a real disappointment in truth and
has never achieved the same quality as the console games. I have
had several serious goes at making it work but its a bit dull.
Sadly the latest expansion by Blizzard has turned out to be the
worst so far and that is on the back of a few stinkers. I have
been playing more Vindictus in truth which is a really old game.
That is why I gave Eve a go again. But that ended today cus I got
so bored.
Anyhoo to the comment ...
Online games debris. Like I say to play an online game you need
an active account and a game server. By nature these games tend
to make money out of your time playing. They anticipate that you
will invest a lot of time with them. It is very easy to get hooked
on these games and that can be most counter productive.
The time they absorb prevents you from doing other things. They
are not casual and can be dangerously addictive. I have forced
myself to take breaks at times. Difficult though if you start to
get dragged into group play and long dungeon runs.
The most tragic part of all this is that none of the things you
accumulate in game are really yours. They are only valid while
the account is running. Consequently all my stuff that I worked
very hard to acquire in game become inaccessible when the your
game time ends. Worse is when they cancel the game. Then you lose
everything.
I have so much game debris littering various servers I wish that
I could retrieve the pixels so I can view them offline. Sadly the
only thing you can salvage is screenshots and online video. Sadly
online games are just that, and having spent a good part of my
life playing them it is a sadness that in the end you own nothing.
Games no longer are issued on discs, they are all downloaded, so
you don't even have a CD/DVD to play with. Not that they are any
use without the game server.
The moral is that if you want access to a game that will always
be available then best play a game you have fully paid for and
needs no form of login. I prefer online games cus I enjoy the life
they have and how nothing is quite ever the same from one session
to another. But, I do wish I could frequent my farms in Archeage
again or use my Dimension in Rift or sit around the camp fire at
my Garrison on my own private computer.
I do sense that all entertainment will eventually be streamed so
the days of discs are probably numbered anyway. I have loved my
years online gaming. I just wish they could make a decent game. In
truth good online games are in short supply.
And no, ' you can't has my stuff '.
