ScuzzBlog: Diaries January 2025
Entry 18th January 2025: Post 1: CrossDOS - 25 years since the last update.
CrossDOS - 25 years since the last update.
I was reading the acknowledgements at the back of the CrossDOS
manual to William S Hawes creator of ARexx, ConMan and WShell and
reflecting on the age of this product now. CrossDOS was first
released October 1st 1989. The last update for version 7 was made
in 1999. To me that feels like a short while ago but it amounts
to 25 years since the last update. I say this cus I still feel
Consultron are active and their copyright should be honoured. So
whilst I made full back copies today of all the versions I have, I
am still reluctant to offer the software for download.
Consultron are still a registered company and I assume are still
working on something. Maybe it is just a holding company. Time
marches on and this century which was only born a moment ago is
now twenty five years young. A lifetime for some that are fresh
faced to the Amiga world. I doubt there are many working on an
upgrade to CrossDOS.
So as I put the small booklets back in their respective places in
my library and check over the files on the emulator to see that
they worked I reflect on my years of transferring files from the
PC to the Amiga and the valued usage CrossDOS gave. Generations
from now few will ever find the tasks necessary. For me though, in
the day CrossDOS was an essential partner in all that I did given
the disk was my only way of transferring stuff off the PC.
I would like to acknowledge the good work of Consultron. I hope
the name lives on as a generous and passionate creator of Amiga
software. The Amiga was so lucky to have such support.
