SEGA - Mega CD II
Man was this a fun packed few weeks trying to get this little
beauty to work. The unit needs a working SEGA Mega Drive which
was my first stumbling block and this finally was resolved by
acquiring another SEGA Mega Drive II. Next up I had no power
supply or TV connector so had to wait as they arrived. Finally
having thoroughly cleaned and tested the Mega Drive I was ready
to kick some SEGA ass... as you do !!
And she worked ... Utterly wonderful, and I mean that. Cus the
gaming experience was faultless and I now have a fully functioning
CD-II and a whole bag of games to play with. Coolio'
The Mega CD was announced in Japan late 1991 and the Sega CD in
North America 1992. The CD was unveiled at the Tokyo Toy Show and
received positive reception at the time. The first release in Japan
was December 1991. Though well received its sales declined relatively
rapidly selling only 100,000 units in the first year. The problem
was seen as a lack of development as Sega took time releasing the
necessary development software kits. At launch there were only two
games available for the unit.
The Sega CD was launched in NA in Oct 92 and would go on to sell
200,000 units by the end of 1992. In the UK the Mega CD appeared
on April 2nd 1993 at a price of nearly £250. Sadly only 70,000 were
initially available in the UK with 60,000 sold by that August.
The model Sega Mega CD II was released in Japan on April 23 1993.
This was very much a cost reduced unit being smaller and not having
the motorised disc tray.
Incredibly in less than a year of launch Sega discontinued development
of the Mega CD shifting their focus onto the Sega Saturn. The official
discontinuation of the product limped on to 1996. For all that 2.24
million of the units were sold world wide. So hardly a collectors item.
Still a nice thing to have.... working.
