Entry 1st July 2018: Post 15: Amiga Format

Amiga Format - The magazine format

The Amiga was very lucky in many ways given that it resided over a
time when magazines were the true great source of information. The
internet era that followed that of the Amiga has systematically
destroyed the written media as an art form and telephones have
single handedly nailed the coffin lid so tight, creative journalism
I doubt will ever see the light of day again.

Times were different and I am glad to have lived through a healthy
period of written work and the publication of magical pages of endless
streams of magazines that did once adorn the shelves of magazine
stores. It bewilders me somewhat that we allowed such losses of
wonderful resources of information to the moronic gibberish of
hand-held social media as a substitute for quality journalism. I
look back at all the magazines I have and am very grateful that
such jewels exist given that had times been different I may never
have held an Amiga Format in my hand.

Not only have we lost the rich and varying computer systems with all
their unique forms and media but so too all the varying magazines and
even the shops that fed all this wonderful product. From high colour
vivid and exciting boxed computers to games in similar tantalising
inviting boxes to media and peripherals and oodles of gloriously
presented magazines, filling shelves in many stores rich with activity.
All gone to Amazon and Ebay and to social media.... the tablet and the
phone have killed off the last vestiges of the world I loved and grew
up in. Sad .. very sad.

Fortunately I still have my magazines. Literally hundreds and hundreds
of them and so I am lucky that with the flick of my fingers and no
electricity save for a light, I can venture back through time and joy
at a time long since past. To a time when communication was not laden
with deceptive tools to pilfer your identity. To a time when the
form of communication was intended to seduce and not to deceive. To a
time when paper was god and words meant something. I love magazines
and I wish today were different.

And so from a tiny fragment in the corner of my magazine stacks I dragged
but a dozen or so early Amiga Formats to delve into the images that they
held. Nothing heavy just a light hearted glimpse in the magazine format.
