Entry 1st July 2018: Post 28: Amiga 4000d
Amiga 4000 Desktop - Busted
I use this 4000d as a shelf to stack Sinclair Spectrum tapes. Sad
I guess. The machine was given to me broken with very little in the
way of explanation as to why. Came stripped down with no power
supply or processor board. Plus a lot of the ribbons were loose
and or missing and the case was unscrewed. You get the picture.
Having reassembled the parts and fitted power and 030 I was able
to get the computer to boot last year. Sadly this time around I
couldn't get anything out of the computer. She just sat there
without any activity at all.
I set too swapping things about and tried a number of floppy drives
including a new unused 4000d drive. Nothing doing. I swapped the
ribbons around, cleaned the drive. Reseated the processor and all
the memory. Still no joy. I removed the drive casing and had a poke
around. You do have to leave the Amiga for a very long time without
the hard drive. I even tried a second drive.
Next up I jacked in an old busted 3.5" to see if I could get anything.
Nothing... no power was getting through to the floppy or the HD.
Then out of the blue the computer just burst into life. The hard drive
span as did the floppy and the Workbench booted from the floppy.
I hooked up a mouse and keyboard and was able to move the cursor
around with the Amiga keys and the arrows, and the click button was
working so I could activate buttons and the like on the screen. The
HD was not visible so I played with HDToolbox and got the drive
volumes to appear on the screen. Sadly it would not boot and that's
the problem with the drive.... and trust me I've tried.
Some kit is busted for a reason.
Anyway I was happy I had the machine working but am suspicious of
the power supply, floppy drive and the memory. None of the extra
memory is visible or being used. Also the SIMM slots are busted
on the one side at the top, or appear that way. Like I say I was
given this A4000 as broken. Really she was only going to be used
for spares and to stack my Spectrum tapes. Kinda a shame really.
I do have a spare A4000d motherboard, but that is for another 4000.
Tempting all the same. I will try again and get this hard drive
working... For that I will need the services of Graham the A1400.
All will be revealed. Or not. DAMN it's hot. Man I hate this bloody
weather. Give me the winter any day. I can always get warm, but it's
impossible getting cool. Never mind. Nights drawing in now.
