Amiga 4000d - 040 board check.
Although the two computers I am going to feature here are broken
I do still check their status to see if the crippled boards have
deteriorated any further.
Next up we have the 040 A4000d that I purchased from Germany in
around 2003. The computer was a workhorse machine for many years
and I used the computer for my Amiga groups posting messages on
various Yahoo Groups and forums. Sadly the SIMM slots, other than
the first main chip RAM slot were broken. It was sold as such.
I recall the night she fell over cus I had just swapped over the
Picasso II for thse Cybervision 64. All was going as normal and then
she just died. Nothing, just a black screen. I have tried so many
times to revive this computer.
Today in addition to the inspection I fitted a spare 030 card that
I found to see if that could breath life into the old gal. First
you have to change the jumpers to INT ( internal ) and also the
one just above, all three moving from the right most jumpers to
the left. Jumpers 100 and 104 to INT and 151 to ROMSPEED 160.
Sadly nothing happened, still dead. Never mind. The board itself
appeared generally fine. It is such a shame cus she has weathered
the years very well and shows very little sign of ageing. I did
enjoy very much my years on the groups with this computer. After
she failed I began using another A4000d in the Workshop with the
Picasso IV, so I was still good to go.
I generally have three A4000ds working and in use. I have an 030
sitting on the desk behind me connected to a Microvitec. I have
my 040 with the very big hard drive set up for the archive and
disk crunching in the workshop running off a 1084S and then I
also have the PIV A4000d kicking through the massive Mitsubishi
monitor which I generally just run to feature animations and such.
Great machine the A4000d. Shame it doesn't have a composite socket.
