Amiga 2000 - A closer look.
First A2000
Had a shot of conscience regarding the A2000 I reused for the
broken A2000's hard drive. So I peeled her open and took a close
look at those pins/socket and chips near the removed battery.
Closer inspection shows the sockets to be green and a level of
corrosion that may mean if removed the CPU would fail.
What is worse is there is a leaky capacitor adjacent and the two
components immediately to the side are green with corrosion.
The tracks appear fine and there is no deterioration of the the
actual circuits. The computer also works fine. Not sure what to
do regarding any of the sockets. They would need to be replaced.
Second A2000
This is a very special A2000 which has a lot of Eric Schwartz
animations on the hard drive. It is the oldest of all my 2000s,
now I think about it. Although the battery looks like it has
eaten a lot more of the track outer layers , the tracks in them-
selves look fine. The socket is corroded again but no worse.
Sadly these machines are getting really old and whoever it was
that decided to put a battery on these Amigas was an idiot.
I really have no solution to the problem. Both these machines
work fine and run without issue. But having removed a GARY chip
and an AGNUS chip from a partially corroded socket I have no
faith in the socket surviving in both cases.
Surprisingly the boards in both computers appear fine. The problem,
now that I reflect on it, is that when I open the A2000/1500, I
never take the floppy drive cradle off to inspect the motherboard.
In future I am going to have to. And sorry but this may sound a bit
backward coming forward but in taking stuff apart you really are
putting the computer at risk. It is a case of making the call as to
whether it is going to do more damage than any faulty component.
Example of busted socket
GARY Chip removed on a 500 and socket is shot.
