Let me start by saying that I am not a great fan of printers. In
truth I never use them and have always preferred to store all of
my documents electronically. However, this blog reflects what I
do each day and today I recovered an old printer and set it up.
Back in 2002 I was in need of a printer to make copies of some
private documents that I needed to forward on. I chose the HP
Deskjet as a suitable printer and hooked it up to my Windows 98
machine. I guess I must have used it for all of two months before
it was unhitched from the computer and thrown in the pantry. My
larder or pantry is where I throw anything I'm unlikely to ever
want to use again.
So twenty years have gone by and the printer has been an annoyance
to me given that I have had to shift it on more than one occasion.
The printer is quite heavy. I do try not to damage stuff, even if
unwanted, and the poor printer did fall on its bottom edge once
breaking off a tray button. Other than that she appeared fine. I
quickly organised some cartridges and then set about trying to
find the CD with the install information for the Win98 machine.
Sadly I have not been able to find the Win98 install and there is
no copy online from any reputable site. Amazingly there was a copy
of the disc for sale on Ebay, and I am waiting on that.
I did want to get my printing done and discovered that HP had the
XP version on their site to download. So in a change of plan I
moved the printer to an XP machine and set matters up from there.
The installation went like a dream and in no time I was printing
off what I needed.
Cartridge ink is the second most expensive fluid known to man and
this was the primary reason I gave up with printing in the first
place. Most if not all printer cartridges sold as new have long
since expired giving the only option to use refurbished ones.
The other consideration when opting for an old printer is the
port connector or what we call ' the printer cable '. The cable
is easy to get, however an LPT port on a computer may be a little
more rare.
I had considered buying a new printer as they were as cheap as
chips. Thing was they all appeared to be wireless and talking in
a language that for me was total 'gobble-de-gook'. I didn't want
any fancy gizmo just a black and white simple port connector
type. I gave up.
Anyhoo, I'm done. I have my fist full of papers and the printer
is sadly destined once more for the pantry. Not sure if I shall
be around in another twenty years, or indeed if any cartridges
will be in existence. The printer is for me reflective of a
pre year 2000 era and something I was quite happy to see the
back of. Sad really ... or not. Probably not. That's what I did
today. Not very inspiring, but then that's printers for you.
