ScuzzBlog: Diaries July 2023
Entry 30th July 2023: Post 1: Amiga Game - Defender of the Crown - Never mind the game.
Amiga Game - Defender of the Crown - Never mind the game.
The title of this blog says it all really, specifically the ref
to 'never mind the game'. In truth if you want just an Amiga game
you are going to download it. Most of the manuals are online and
there are very few games not described on some YouTube video. So
what do I mean .. 'never mind the game'. Read on.
I am a collector of everything related to home computing and home
entertainment. Over the years I've spent bonkers amounts of money
on the most obscure item. Truth is if I want it bad enough I'll
probably eventually splash out the cash. However, I do avoid being
taken advantage of. Many an item that I wouldn't mind acquiring I
have just ignored cus of the silly money being asked.
And so to these games like Defender of the Crown. The game is a
classic and one that would sit pretty in any aspiring collectors
vault. However, when it comes to these games you gotta ask just
what are you buying. Consider the current raft of this game on
Ebay. They range from 40 to 150 quid. Not one of them is the big
box game edition, they are all the 9 quid budget titles. This
means the cut down box art and even the cut down manual. Trust
me when buying these games you are not buying the game, you are
buying the box art.
Next up is the validation of the full product i.e. is it all there.
If I buy the Mutant Turtles I am expecting to get the balloon.
No balloon and I aint buying it for a fat load of cash. Same goes
for the poster. No poster then I am only prepared to pay peanuts.
With respect to the disk it matters not what any seller tells you
they cannot guarantee the disk, so forget it. Just assume you are
going to be playing a cracked download game, but at least you have
the manual, guide and more importantly the passwords.
Next up, has some annoying gamer written in the notes section of
the manual or worse used highlighter? You would need images of
the whole manual to verify this.
In truth it really isn't worth the risk and doesn't matter how
classic a game is you aint getting more than 30 quid out of me for
a big box game with the manual, balloon and commemorative badge
and poster. For the money being asked the item is being offered
as a collectors item cus who on earth is going to pay 60 squids
for a bloody old load of medieval crap that is duller than a dull
thing with a very good reason for being dull. Most Amiga games
are truly boring and so out of date, seriously. BUT, the collectors
aspect is important.
So what do I do. So funny... like I'm gonna tell you that.
Anyhoo I had the disks for this game strewn all over the place.
It is one of the most common of games I have with originals and
copies in various of my disk boxes. I was pleasantly surprised to
discover the 'big box' manual and addendum sheet in with that
WorkStation I featured the other day. So that is why I used the
game to discuss this subject.
The game is kinda cute and with the limited graphics lets you
exploit medieval or Robin Hood era England to raid, plunder,
joust and rescue damsels in distress. Don't get too excited the
graphical interpretation is more like cartoon from Monty Python.
I kinda got bored within about a couple of minutes, but then I
have played it several times before and got equally bored. 1986,
not a very good year for the Amiga and games.
With the disks I found on one shelf was Balance of Power from the
same era and that is an interesting game... well 'ish.
Please don't waste your money on these games let me do that for you
when the current sellers reduce the price cus nobody wants them.
Whoops, giving away my secrets.
