Amiga 1200 - The T.A.N.K.
I do wish normal life wouldn't get in the way of my fun activities.
I have the house again in turmoil as men armed with chainsaws
trapes their way through my workshop doing their stuff. Give a man
a chainsaw here in the New Forest and they become deadly cowboys.
I am still going through the Amiga 1200s and checking out their
status. I do love coming across an old friend and recalling the
times we had together. T.A.N.K. is a computer that I have many
fond memories.
She was my second Amiga 1200 that I purchased. During the Xmas of
1995 some of the guys at work anticipated I would buy a PC. However
a failed attempt to fit an IDE 1GB drive to my main A1200 simply
nudged me into getting another A1200. I was out of drive space and
I had tried and failed to get a 3.5" working. I now realise I
needed a more powerful PSU. I bought a 550MB drive from Gordon
Harwood and so had the old 350MB spare. So I purchased T.A.N.K.
to take my old hard drive.
T.A.N.K. so named cus I got her from the tank base in Bovington
cost me 200 quid. She has a broken PCMCIA slot and struggles with
most RAM cards I try to fit. She is OK with accelerators, its just
the RAM cards she struggles with.
I had the computer set up in the workshop back in 1996 and used her
as a games machine. I would often come home late those dark wet
winters when I worked in Fareham and it was so convenient to have
the computer on tap to lose myself playing games. I had suddenly
become a two Amiga 1200 user. I had already an A500 in the lounge,
and soon would be adding an A600 to the team. This was the start
of my Amiga collecting. Mad.
I had forgotten she had no RAM card so when I switched on, SysInfo
registered no memory or accelerator. I thought the card may be
broken until I opened the trapdoor to discover nothing.
Rock steady this computer and booted no problem. Like I say if I
slotted in the Blizzard which I was tempted to do she works just
brilliant. But she is temperamental with certain RAM cards.
That was that, and she is working fine. I managed to check all
the A1200s before the blistering heat arrives on Tuesday. I still
have the cowboys hitched up to the rail outside this week , so I
am off line again for a week or so. Never mind.
