Amiga Game - Midwinter - cold comfort for hot days.
Midwinter is a game that is easy to learn and evidently quite
difficult to master. Fascinating for me is a game of this complexity
housed within the confines of one single double density disk. The
game is the brainchild of Mike Singleton who went on to create the
aptly named Midwinter II.
In the game you control Captain John Stark who is leader of the
Free Villagers Peace Force which is the law enforcement agency in
charge of the island Midwinter. As ever there is a baddy to confront
in the name of General Masters who controls enemy forces in the
south east who are attempting to capture the heat mines.
The aim is simple and that is to recruit fellow members of your
forces of which there are 40 and defeat General Masters.
Clicking Captain Stark's portrait from the 'Team Display'gives access
to all his personal details. The icon map gives a quick reference
and identification of what icons are. Information can be obtained of
your teams personality, their characteristics and abilities.
You start the game controlling Captain stark and are armed with just a
rifle and some grenades. You will soon be under attack and need to make
your way to the nearest place of safety or garage. Important will be
locating your colleagues awaiting recruitment.
As the game title suggests you are in the chilly snow which is truly
cold comfort on hot days like these.
So why Midwinter of all games today. I was flicking through The One
featuring The Brat and it struck me that in all my years of owning
this game I doubt I have ever played it. I found the disk but sadly
the game box and manual is deep in tub mountain in tub 4. I wasn't
minded to try and retrieve it. I took the opportunity of photographing
the contents of disk box 41 which contained a few classics. Note that
The One game review is for Midwinter II.
Can't say I was that impressed with the game albeit it was a busy
little beast from the getgo. I am sure with a little more play time
it gets more interesting. Like I have said many times I don't
actually play retro games. The problem these days is I have so
limited capacity for storage in my brain I just don't have the
desire to load in anymore data. So unless a game grabs me from the
getgo with a simple format I am unlikely to venture very far into
the game. What was interesting was learning a bit about the game
and finally being able to associate the game title with actual content.
Anyhoo its very hot here and I am having to change my hours of operation.
Sadly that means less time up here at the business end of the blog.
So things may slow up a bit until such a time as the death star passes.
I'm sure I will find some time to throw the odd thing onto the
bench. For now I'm back to Midwinter which is somewhere I seriously
wish I could escape to.
Happy days.
