Entry 1st June 2024: Post 1: Win10 and Silmarils - I'm missing something

Win10 and Silmarils - I'm missing something

I've combined two discussions today just cus the subject matter
is quite lightweight and hardly needing of two blogs.

First up I switched on the Win10 machine and received an instant
alert from Microsoft telling me that they are withdrawing support
for Windows 10 next year. In making the point they bludgeon me
with this full page splash screen which tells me my computers
crap and I need to upgrade if I can take advantage of the juicy
new content.

Here is the scoop, it is June 1st 2024 and I'm still using my Win7
machine. Firefox will discontinue their support in September but
the killer will be Norton if they pull the plug on Win7. Otherwise
I'm staying Win7 side at the moment.

You really do miss the simplicity of Win7 when you have to use
Win10. With Win 10 it's all in your face and stuff is visibly rammed
down your throat. There is little escape from MS and other software
laying claim to your time and screen space. I don't get any of that
with Win7. I'm free to do just what I want.

I'm not going to miss Win10 cus I never used the thing. It's crap.
I purchased a Win10 machine when the Win7 machine went pop. With
what was just a few days of using Win10 I very quickly set about
repairing the Win7 machine and have done so yet again rather than
suffer the pain that is 'telephone computing'. Why do I always
feel when using Win 10 that the computer has been kidnapped and
I am just a passenger.

As to what I do next year, I haven't decided. I will most likely
get a new computer but this time it may not be using Microsoft.

One further thing and that is Microsoft's underhand manoeuvring to
isolate gaming software to a game-pass process so insuring that to
play you gotta be part of the Microsoft family. All kinds of pledges
were made to SONY about Call of Duty, but it appears MS just tore
up the rule book. Next up, I'm sure, Warcraft will go game-pass and
so lose its subscription basis. game pass is just another claw in
your flesh of which there is little escape.

Thinks... It wasn't that long ago MS said they had no intention of
releasing a new version of Windows and they intended simply to
upgrade Win10 'forever'. Like I ever believed that.

I am fast losing patience with MS. Time to move on.

NEXT UP:

What happened to the edge of my display in Ishar 2 and Ishar 3. After
some thirty years playing this game I have never encountered any
problems. But having transferred Ishar to the emulator from that
dodgy disc I now find I have a section of screen missing to the very
right edge. Trouble is I need the edge cus it has movement control
and fight slots. Puzzling. Same with Ishar 3.

I checked on the emulator with another Ishar game installation and
its fine, no problem at all.

The problem is not limited to the emulator cus the game has the
same problem on the Amiga 1200. The edge is missing. It is not an
overscan issue cus other games work just find and the Workbench
screen is set properly. It's just Ishar.

I'll have to dig out the box and see if there were any trouble-
shooting tips. I wasn't aware of any, and the game works fine on
my other A1200s. What is bewildering is how a glitch also got
transferred to the emulator.

Answers on a postcard. I've never really experienced this before.

PS Everything is set to PAL and the correct screen size. The overscan
is 672 x 276 which is higher than my normal 640 x 256. So more of
the screen is available.

SOLVED:

I just answered my own question. I realised that the graphics area
may be bigger but the centre of the display is way off. So I set
the Overscan to match my actual Amiga 1200 that I've had since 1993
so that the centre is on 72,15 with a graphics area of 640 x 256
and like magic that solved the problem. Looks like someone has been
messing around with the graphics overscan, thinking they had the
largest scan area but with the centre set incorrectly had cut off
the right edge.

OK carry on with what ever you were doing.

Win10 and Silmarils - I'm missing something

The centre of the graphics area was set incorrectly.

I changed it to the same setting as my other machines.

Like magic the right hand edge reappeared.

Amazing that the Overscan settings were transferred
to the emulator with Workbench. Or not. So funny.
