Entry 5th June 2024: Post 1: KCS PowerPC and Checkmate - Backup on the emulator.

KCS PowerPC and Checkmate - Backup on the emulator.

I am in the throws of backing up my ZIP discs onto the emulator
and man does this take a long time. I had planned to spend only
the day on the Checkmate backup but finished up taking two days.

The Checkmate is the A500 in a special case and is fitted with a
MegaChip and ROM splitter giving the machine 1.3 and 2.04. There
are plenty of blogs on the site about the Checkmate.

The machine was once owned by a Mr Lomas who recorded all his
activities and he was involved in the early testing of the KCS
PowerPC card for the Amiga 500. Since I've had the Checkmate there
has always been a strange file on the Workbench for the KCS card
but no reference on the hard drives. The PowerPC board is not
fitted to the Checkmate.

I also have so many disks which are revised Workbench 1.3 disks
specifically for the PC emulator. In backing up the Checkmate
onto the emulator I set too seeing if I could find any reference
to the KCS card. Having spent way too much time on this I did
discover a version of 1.3 with a revised startup that refers to
a PC clock. However, I still cannot find the source of the rogue
KCS file on screen. On the emulator the file does not appear.
I am pretty sure it is a KCS RAM file which appears when you run
the emulator on an A500 using the PC board.

The process of setting up the Checkmate on the emulator was a
little convoluted to say the least. The Workbench copy that I
had backed up onto ZIP disc would not work with a 2.04 set-up. I
kept getting a strange error message saying that the Kickstart
was not compatible. This could be to do with the ROM switcher.
I worked around the problem by setting up an A600 installation
which in truth the Checkmate is very much customised to suit and
that worked just fine.

The original backup was made on an Amiga 2000 using 2.04 and then
transferred to an A600 where is was backed up to ZIP. All around
the houses as it were. Thankfully the two drives that currently
sit on an external SCSI drive and A590 now have a home on the
Win7 machine utilising the emulator. I no longer have to trek
down the stairs and fire up the Checkmate to check over files.

I couldn't resist a quick game of DragonTiles.

I plan on repeating the process for the EyeTech EZTower. Having
transferred only one ZIP so far I sense this may take longer than
two days. The amount if files is quite staggering and there are a
lot on the tower. I shall return back to that challenge tomorrow.

Happy Days.
