Freezer Trick - Finally failed.
Posted this last night in respect of the hard drive that I had
recently recovered yet again using the freezer trick.
Sorry no post as such tonight as I encountered a strange issue
with the A1200 that I just recovered the hard drive on. As a test
to see that the machine boots and the drive is working I do boot
without the monitor switched on. Sadly tonight I got a green
flashing power light and the hard drive was flickering on and off.
I stripped down and removed the accelerator but with just the power
and monitor connected ( but not switched on ) The computer just
went through this flashing power cycle
I then disconnected the 1942 monitor and the problem cleared and
she booted fine.
So I reconnected the monitor and this time switched it on. The
computer then booted fine and no problems. Try to boot with the
monitor off and the power light flashes.
I suspect a bigger problem sadly cus this shouldn't happen.
Took me all night in here to get to a point where I could leave
things. I even tried other power supplies.
I sense a capacitor problem as something I flicking high or not
and the power circuit on the monitor when active is clearing the
problem. I will see how things go tomorrow.
Sorry for that, I had a blog ready to go tonight but just ran out
of time.
The more I thought about the problem of the flickering hard drive
with no monitor plugged in , yet connected, pointed to a 'ground'
issue in that the machine was using the ground on the monitor when
plugged in to complete the circuit.
Although the computer was now working just fine I couldn't live
with there being a problem that was simply lurking. So I switched
the machine on one last time with the monitor plug disconnected.
Sure enough the drive just went into a flicker frenzy.
I rebooted the machine with the monitor connected and this time
got a software failure. [ been here before ]. Next up the disk
light remained illuminated and the hard drive was just spinning
around endlessly. Eventually after around fifteen minutes or so
the drive eventually booted, but for me it was 'Coopers ducks'.
The drive has actually fallen over. It just didn't know it was dead
yet. All the fun and games with the monitor was a smoke screen.
The drive has failed, and that kinda makes me sad. Fortunately I
was able to recover the contents of the drive, so no great loss.
Just that I hate losing anything.
I let her spin the validate merry-go-round one last time so I
could take a short video of her working, and then I closed this
A1200 down and moved back the 1200 that had been sitting here.
I will get another drive but really it won't be the same.
The drive has been with me a long time. I banged the thing back
into action on 18th October 2017, then freezer tricked it on the
15th October 2021, and again just a few weeks back. This time I
aint gonna be able to fool it any longer.
I guess all things have to end some time. Never mind.
