Game Boy Color - Stowaway
Whilst shifting the box for the Amiga 1000 ... see next post out
popped a tiny Nintendo Game Boy Color. Cute as buttons and locked
and loaded with Metal Gear Solid. I seriously have no idea how
long the little thing has been lost behind this box. The batteries
still worked and the game ran without any problem.
No real retro thread here, just gave me the chance to photograph
the clear plastic casing. Interesting little games machine.
Nintendo Game Boy Color released in Japan in the October of 1998.
This handheld games console was the successor to the Game Boy.
And now the interesting factoids .....
The processor on this little beast is a Sharp LR35902 based on
the Zilog Z80 ( sound familiar ). Colours available were a
whopping 32,768. ROM is 8MB and RAM just 32kB. VRAM is 16kB.
The Cartridge RAM is 128 kB. The clock speed is 8MHz and is
something like twice as fast as the original Game Boy.
What is most impressive is that the Game Boy Color had 576 games
made for it and its backward compatibility meant it could also
run the older games. The best selling games being Pokemon Gold
and Silver. The last game released was in November 2003.
By my reckoning there were like 120 million of these things
sold so don't hold your breath on them getting rare. Fun though.
Still the third best selling system of all time. A nice to have.
