Entry 27th March 2020: Post 01: Was Amiga WB v1.1 so different from v3.0
Was Amiga WB v1.1 so different from v3.0
I'm a WB 3.0 man through and through. Always have been and always
will be. So when I was fiddling with 1.3 the other day and truly
amazed that I could modify the disk sufficiently to let me read
LhA and CrossDOS, I became intrigued as to what were the main
differences between the first WB and WB3.0.
I dragged out the respective original disks and copied them to
my Workbench on my games machine, which indecently is Wb3.1 on
a machine with a 3.0 ROM [ long story.. 2.5" from another
Amiga 1200 machine ].
First thing you notice is the Kickstart Disk ROM which I had to
ADF to copy. Next the few number of disks for V1.1. Lastly that
the original had a guide, narrator device and Amiga BASIC as part
of the set. These things, particularly BASIC was removed with
2.0, I assume to cut Gates out of the game.
Saying all that the base structure of the files were not that
dissimilar. There were obvious shortages of various files and
drawers but the essence of the file structure was much the same.
It wouldn't be possible to completely fudge a fresh copy of the
V1.1 WB to give it 3.0 functionality but it would certainly be
worth having a go to try and see what you could copy over and
or modify to get the V1.1 working with a little more oomph !!
So to begin the process and to enable me to compare files I did
this blog showing the variations using DOpus. I haven't included
all the screen shots but you get the idea. The V1.1 is on the
left of the DOpus screen and V3.0 is on the right. What I would
like to do is add a few more drawers so that I can boot various
bits of basic software with the Workbench disks. After all this
is how the 1060 works by using a specially edited version of
the Workbench disk.
My aim would be some how to track over to WB3.0 stylie for things
like AmigaGuide, Parnet, CrossDOS and LHA while retaining the
integrity of the boot disks.
And so here are by comparison screen shots that I will use whilst
I have a play.
There are two versions of Workbench 3.0 cus one is a more clean
label for photograph purposes. My original disks from 1993 all
have a little 'X' on them and , yes, they all still work.
Programs that I believe should be still part of the OS is for
me BASIC and 'Say'. These two things are always integrated into
my Workbench along with AmigaGuide and all the DataTypes, CED
or another good text editor, Parnet and SCSIToolBox, plus DOpus.
I shall use the Amiga 1000 to test. More to follow.
Was Amiga WB v1.1 so different from v3.0
The clock is still correct on this
machine after 25 years without the
battery ever being changed.
