Entry 12th March 2021: Post 1: Acorn Pocket Book II A-Link RS232 Serial Interface.
Acorn Pocket Book II A-Link RS232 Serial Interface.
The Pocket Book II has featured a few times on the blog so I am
not going to discuss the Acorn specs again. Released in 1995
as the successor to the Pocket Book it boasts being twice as fast.
The real interest for me was the ability to link the little
gadget to a RISC based computer running 3.1 of the RISC OS3 or
better using a RS232 Serial Interface.
And so I show today the special A-Link RS232 Serial Interface
plus the special software and instruction pack that allows the
Pocket Book to talk to a RISC computer. In my case the ever so
wonderful RISC Station.
Whilst I have quite a few hand held gadgets I would say that I
have like zero interest in any of them. I have never felt very
comfortable with the screens and my thinking power tends to be
more concentrated in the field when I have my good old fashioned
day book and a pen. I know just where to find stuff in my books.
I can understand why folk used these, but I guess with the risk
or should I say 'RISC' of data loss, it's not something I would
tolerate given that paper is way more resilient.
Anyhoo I finally got to put these two boxes together which I
have been threatening for some while. I do have just one more
Acorn box which has a whole load of goodies for the Pocket Book
including a power supply no less. The other box is in a cupboard
to the rear of a stack of A500s so will have to wait.
1995 was the release and during that year my main computer was
the Amiga 1200 so I doubt I even knew of the Acorn Pocket Book.
