Entry 8th March 2022: Post 2: Amiga 1.3 AmigaDOS - I don't C any files.
Amiga 1.3 AmigaDOS - I don't C any files.
The issue of Workbench 1.3 and the SHELL seems to be coming up more
and more these days. All I can say, yet again, is grab a good ref.
book for AmigaDOS and learn what tools you have in the 'C' drawer.
Just to repeat what I have said many times on these blogs, WB 1.3
and earlier will not display all files from the drop down menu. So
in essence there are hidden drawers on the Workbench desktop. Most
Amiga drawers have associated icons, but some don't and without a
File Manager like SID you will not see them. So get a File Manager.
AmigaDOS commands generally reside in the 'C' drawer which is not
visible when you open your Workbench. To see what you have in 'C'
fire up SID and open that 'C' drawer.
Next, and to the SHELL which will be on the main desktop. All of the
AmigaDOS commands are entered in the SHELL window. The SHELL is
also better known as the CLI or Command Line Interface.
With Version 1.3 Commodore released the 'Enhancer Software' and the
book is the early version of DOS with the list of commands. This
book is not the Amiga manual for which ever computer you have, nor
is it the BASIC manual. It needs to be the Enhancer Software that
has AmigaDOS 1.3.
There are earlier books for 1.2 but I always suggest upgrading to
the Workbench 1.3. Additionally if you can find a ROM switcher to
utilise the 2.04 ROM it really helps with disk and hard drive prep
and format tools. Not easy getting one but they do appear from time
to time.
ABACUS for me are the best books to get and there are quite a few
in the series. Start with AmigaDOS and then get others. The 1.3
and 2.0 version is preferred. You may even get the support disk.
That list of important facts:
01: Workbench 1.3 has no facility to show hidden files.
02: Use a File Manager to view hidden files.
03: The SHELL is where you enter AmigaDOS commands.
04: For a list of AmigaDOS commands get the Enhancer Software book.
05: Try and get a good AmigaDOS reference manual from say ABACUS.
... and look out for a ROM switcher.
