Entry 11th March 2022: Post 1: Myst - Came way too late for the Amiga.

Myst - Came way too late for the Amiga.

First up can I just say that I am having a deja vu moment here as
I was sure I had reviewed this game previously. Just that I now
have my hands on an Amiga CD for the game and I really just was
going to say that, but I finished going the whole hog again only
to find I'd already done this in October 2019. Nay mind ay !!
Sorry for that.

The pages of the remaining Amiga magazines were all a buzz at the
end of 1997. In the space of a few months the game Myst received
review after preview after review. It was like nothing else really
mattered gaming wise. The truth was there wasn't much else. This
game was old by the time it got to the Amiga. It was released at
a time when Commodore were still in existence. September 24 1993
and was initially released for the Macintosh. And then following
that it was released to all the major platforms and consoles on
a drip feed with the Amiga being the last it appears. And so this
came way too late.

The game is a puzzle solving exploration game where you as a first
person player travel through mysterious locations solving stuff.
The atmosphere and graphics for the period were quite stunning
though relatively static. For me I was playing way more imaginative
games on the PC so this thing really was old in the tooth by the
mid nineties.

I can understand why the Amiga mags got excited about the port
with so little new large titles being released for the Amiga. But
for me it showed more that the Amiga had fallen way behind. The
active user base had dwindled to intrepid 'towerisers' that had
bit the bullet and placed their machines into PC style towers with
the kit to play graphics and sound on a CD. By 1997 most media was
CD based and unless your Amiga had been upgraded accordingly you
were really a second class citizen.

Anyhoo the game was created by Rand and Robyn Miller, developed by
Cyan and published by Broderbund. I have never been able to get an
Amiga copy of this game, well until now. I acquired a German version
just for the hell of it, and it will never come out of its cellophane
wrapping. It'll go on a shelf and be forgotten for ever. And as for
which platforms got a version of this game well that would be ..

MacOS, Saturn, PlayStation, 3D0, Windows, Atari, Jaguar, CD-i,
Pocket PC, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, Android,
Oculus Quest, Nintendo Switch, XBOX One and on and on plus Amiga.

My problem with the game is that it's a first person thang ...

I guess if you fired up your Shapeshifter you could play the game
as originally intended on the Mac... or next best thing a washing
machine... I seriously have to stop taking the piss out of the Mac.
I mean they have Apple to do that... Sorry.

OK I know I am a day behind on the blogs. Blame Yorha 2B.

Myst - Came way too late for the Amiga.

Meanwhile back in October 2019

October19 2101: scuzzblog: M Y S T - Again.

I knew I had already reviewed this game.
Guess I should have checked. Also showed my
PC version of the game. Never mind.. Nothing
to see here ... Onward.
