ScuzzBlog: Diaries March 2022

Entry 22nd March 2022: Post 1: Amiga PD - Roberta Smith DTP.

Amiga PD - Roberta Smith DTP.

It seems that every serious Amiga user that I acquired collections
from had their own favourite Public Domain and Shareware supplier.
One such PD House is that of Roberta Smith DTP. I have a full disk
box full of her disks together with a couple of catalogue disks.

Having the catalogues for any Public Domain disk supplier is so
very useful. Although the disks carried specific labels for the
PD supplier the disks themselves were very often available through
a whole raft of various PD houses. I do come across the same disks
on any number of other labels.

I wouldn't recommend anyone every try to assemble a complete set
of an one PD suppliers catalogue of disks. I don't really know how
disks were stored at the PD houses, or how they managed the copying
process. What I do know from the catalogue lists is that the numbers
run easily into their thousands. I have the various volumes of the
17Bit collection and the catalogue is enormous.

Roberta Smith did carry a very healthy stock of very good disks and
software. I could well see why an Amiga user would focus on the one
list. I guess when you have a good relationship with the house and
find just what you are looking for you are rarely going to shop
around.

Disks cost 80 to 90p depending on the numbers you ordered plus the
postage and packing. PD stuff can be a bit hit and miss given that
you would generally buy on the title description. The catalogue did
help and so before buying it was very sensible to arm yourself with
a catalogue description. In my time I received a lot of disks that
fell well short of the anticipated quality. It was also worth noting
that the supplier was simply just that, a supplier of disks. The
content of the disks were very much out of their control.

Anyhoo... if you are in the mood to start collecting PD disks then
I would prepare for a very long hard struggle which you will sadly
fail. Nobody really knows the full extent of the portfolio given
that the lists grew by the month. What is tremendously sad is that
at some point the houses closed and disposed of their stock. I do
dread to think what that meant.

Here is a selection from the Roberta Smith disk box. And if you
read my next blog today you will realise that Roberta isn't the
lady on the floppy label.
