Entry 31st March 2022: Post 1: The very first Commodore MINI.
The very first Commodore MINI.
With all the excitement these days of 'MINI' Commodore products,
it is easy to forget that it was Commodore themselves that first
came up with the idea of a mini version of one of their own
computer systems. The Commodore 64GS or 'Games System' was a C64
without the keyboard and drive facility and driven by a ROM insert.
Sound familiar. It has only taken like thirty five years for the
current industry to catch up.
The GS will retail at just 99.99 and come with a controller
and four pack cartridge.
All that you needed to do to feed the GS was get games suppliers
to convert their cassette based games to cartridge. Not unlike
converting modern games to ROM or other archived formats. It is
really amazing that Commodore were happy to strip down their C64
to its core elements in such a dramatic way.
What would be interesting is to know just how many in the C64
community managed to get hold of one of these just so they could
turn it into a fully functioning C64. Much like the modern day
users that are busy working out how to covert their modern 'MINI'
machines into fully working models.
Cute thought would be to make a 'MINI-GS' or mini-mini.
Happy days ....
