ScuzzBlog: Diaries March 2023
Entry 14th March 2023: Post 1: Casio fx-82C - Scientific Calculator.
Casio fx-82C - Scientific Calculator.
The Casio fx-82C Scientific Calculator was my main calculator from
1988 right up to 2006. Sadly one day she just gave up and stopped
working. I have spent some time trying to work out the fault and
have determined the connector to the one battery plate is broken.
The calculator was used in my daily work as a technical architect
designing and detailing buildings. This predates my later years on
the computer and therefore accuracy of my drawn work on an actual
drawing board relied on the functionality and accuracy of this
splendid machine.
The calculator was so easy to use and gave me so much more than
you would normally get with a standard calculator. Trigonometry
features so heavily in an architects life what with drainage
calculations, survey analysis, detailed components, inclines of
roofs and structural supports, ground contouring etc. Not a day
went by when I wasn't reaching for this little beauty.
Later my focus moved to finances and tender evaluation and day
to day contract management. All projects are subject to cost
analysis and architects are responsible for valuation payments
to contractors on projects which were in the millions. So getting
numbers correct was essential.
I never threw the calculator out of my bag. I did move to another
but in truth it was never the same. I have pondered many times
whether to get a working version, and this last week I finally
caved and bought a boxed working model off the Bay. She arrived
and works just fine. Job done.
The Casio fx-82C dates from 1988 some 35 years ago. She has a thin
flexible PCB that involves no soldering. The operating logic for
the system is algebraic. Mostly what made this calculator ahead of
its time was the scientific functionality found only on much more
advanced and expensive machines.
Anyhoo I have a working one again after some 17 years and so I
guess I'm a happy little bunny, as they say.
Happy days.
PS I did check the batteries and they are Casio and look brand new.
