Entry 30th May 2024: Post 1: A1200 HD failure - Rebuilding on the emulator.

A1200 HD failure - Rebuilding on the emulator.

UPDATE: 00:21 31/05/2024 Its late again ..

I doubt there are many that could or would do what I do to keep
my collected worth intact. It takes a lot of effort and time and
dare I say plenty of good old blind determination. Thankfully I do
have the time, and also the kit to let me do these things.

So today I started the slow steady process of backing up the 1.4GB
hard drive that I recovered using the 'freezer trick' and then
transferring the files to the emulator.

The journey starts slow and is a little laborious but it speeds
up by the end. The journey may seem a little convoluted but trust
me it works every time.

First up the drive is a Seagate ST91430AG Marathon 1449 MB SSL ATA2.

Here are the steps:
01: Remove failed hard drive and recover using 'Freezer Trick'.
02: Swap over an active Amiga for the one with the dodgy drive.
03: Install Blizzard 1230IV Turbo into swapped machine.
04: Insert and install HiSoft Surf Squirrel and configure.
05: Attach Iomega SCSI 100MB ZIP drive.
06: Configure DOpusIV to see ZIP drive.
07: Begin process of archiving sections of drive to LHA files.
08: With around 100MB of files safely backed up copy to ZIP.
09: Remove ZIP disk and move down stairs to a Win98 machine.
10: Use internal ZIP drive to retrieve the LHA files.
11: Connect NetGear switch and fire up XP machine.
12: Insert USB into XP machine and copy files across network.
13: Move to Win7 machine and copy the LHA files to my 'Amulator'.
14: Use WinUAE to create all the partitions needed.
15: Install Workbench 3.0.
16: Use secondary config to extract the LHA files.
17: Fire up config of copied machine and copy over the files.
18: Replace Workbench with the one with the dodgy hard drive.
19: Restart and like magic I have the first parts of the drive.
20: Steadily continue with the process till complete.

I use LHA cus it is easier to transfer in chunks and there is
a chance of failure moving so many thousands of individual
files. Also Windows has a habit of refusing to recognise certain
files such as AUX and LPT.

Has taken me three days so far and I'm guessing it will take a
couple more days, if I can resist playing with stuff. My main
aim was to recover all my DICE stuff and various programs. The
machine was configured to run DICE from one of the partitions
and save in another. I have been careful to maintain this.

I actually now have four copies of the dodgy disk. Whilst it took
hours to build the archive it took literally a blink of an eye for
the XP machine to copy the archives to a USB stick. The archive
now resides on, ZIP, Win98, XP and Win7 drives. I can now relax
and stop troubling myself with a dodgy disk.

Happy days.

On the Amiga.

And now on the emulator.
