Entry 20th May 2026: Post 1: Amiga game - Dragonstone by Core.

A recent forum post questioned whether original Amiga users kept
their games boxes after purchase. Difficult for me to even ever
contemplate throwing such wonderfully colourful boxes away. After
all I payed for the thing and it had great use containing the inner
contents so I could store on a shelf. In truth I don't think I
have ever thrown a games box away, regardless of platform.
Sadly games like Dragonstone probably never had the box opened
more than a handful of times. This was one of those games that I
pretty much rejected from the first playing. I wasn't wrong either
as none of the magazine reviews in the day seemed to like the game.
I store my boxes and the contents separately. The boxed artwork goes
on a shelf out of the suns gaze. The manual is stored alphabetically
on another shelf with all my games manuals. The original disks would
have always been placed in a plastic sleeve and then housed in a
disk box. This way I could ensure the disk stood vertically and was
in a dust free controlled environment. I can always tell whether a
game is one of my original purchases from the plastic sleeves to
the disks.
Going back to that storing boxes, I guess I have never viewed the
boxes as anything other than an integral part of the purchase. When
buying the game I would have first viewed the game descriptive from
the box to see if I would be likely to play it. In truth I was very
likely to buy a game simply cus of the box art. Even today there is
little reason to throw boxes away. Never got out of the habit.
Anyhoo ... I didn't review the game cus I never played it. I have
a simple rule about games and that is you should be able to play
right out of the box without any instruction and enjoy your first
spin without any help. I can tell immediately if a game works or
doesn't and I rarely revisit games that fell at the first hurdle.
Saying all that it was worth buying the game just for the box.
PS It was why I bought the PS5 with the disc drive so I could buy
the original games and their plastic holders. A game never really
seems like a game without the original disk/disc and its box.
