Entry 21st May 2026: Post 1: Amiga game - Darkmere and my quest to find the box.
Amiga game - Darkmere and my quest to find the box.
One of the most common problems you will hear me discuss on the
blogs is my frustration at not being able to access stuff. It is
not the case of not knowing where something is but more the
challenge of retrieving the item. Take the box and manual for the
game Darkmere. I am putting together a little feature on Core and
I wanted to show off a similar game to Dragonstone that was a
little more successful. Enter Darkmere. Sadly I run into my same
old problems with the collection and that is the box is trapped
behind a wall of boxes. It took no time at all to establish just
where the box was, but to get it out would be too great a challenge.
And so I didn't try. There are two stacks of tubs way up to the
ceiling. Never mind.
Reading up on Darkmere it seems a way better game than Dragonstone.
It features an isometric style of game with drop down menus and
calls upon your skill to navigate a non-linear world and map out
your travels. All the usual stuff associated with fantasy games
and looks a hoot and a half. It even scored well in Amiga Format
I guess I could nab the manual off the web from somewhere. Kinda
want to have a quest now I have seen what is involved. Looks very
promising. Sorry about that.
Interestingly one of the games boxes that I very often wish to recall
from this tub is FIFA Soccer. This game was an age in coming to the
Amiga and failed so badly. However, it represents the only version
that the game made for the Amiga. As bad as it is it is an important
version of the game for its rarity. I guess I could have a go at the
tubs, who knows.
